What is the real definition of duplicate content?

Can you explain more about duplicate content and whether or not that would result in some type of search engine penalty? Maybe some ideas on how to avoid duplicate content. Also, can you give me some examples of good and bad duplicate content?

Duplicate content usually refers to multiple pages on the same site that have exact content. It does not refer to a site sharing the same content as another. This latter example is not duplicate content, but what's called syndicated content.

One example of duplicate content might be on a forum where you have two versions of each post, one for regular users and another for mobile users. Each version of the page would be formatted differently, but would have identical content. Google considers this type of duplicate content to be acceptable as the main purpose of the page(s) is to assist the viewer in seeing the content.

Another type of duplicate content page, might be the 'printer friendly' page, which is usually available on sites. Any links leading to a printer only page should be no follow to prevent Google from indexing those pages as they are a duplicate of another page on site.

Duplicate contents mean similar contents already exist online, If you based your article on online research and it does not have any new idea, it is a duplicate content. Spun or rewritten articles are also duplicate contents. If a large portion of your content is copied from other sources, it will also be termed as duplicate contents.
