Do the tags used on a Wordpress blog post actually help that post rank better?

Would Google ignore these type of tags as spam?

Wordpress tags are very SEO useful and search engine robots find them and crawl faster then other links

Tags are not important anymore . There is not much value in it .
And the main concern is competitors can steal your keyword ideas from those tags .

They not important, but in most cases i see that Google robots crawl tags faster then posts or pages, so your tag links appear on Google search faster then other links from your blog... Just 2 cents from my experience

In a word, no. Google does sell a Google Search Appliance, and that product has the ability to match meta tags, which could include the keywords meta tag. But that's an enterprise search appliance that is completely separate from our main web search. Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don't have any effect in our search ranking at present.

I don't think that @Wayne thought about meta tags, buy about wordpress tags as internal links to posts!!!

This is a nice discussion because I am learning about tags. Now that you say tags are not important then it is like saying you don’t benefit from keywords anymore regarding SEO? Pardon me if I have misunderstood your comment above. In one discussion it was said that they tag is the description of the content for the benefit of search engines. If that is true then tags or keywords are SEO items.
