    If you do too much backlinking then maybe that is a bad thing as it could be perceived as blackhat by Google and you could get the penalty with Penguin. That could be a disadvantage of purposefully trying to use SEO tactics.

    Well, SEO is too competitive so this is really tough thing to optimize a keyword, it takes lot of time, lots of knowledge and you should be familiar with algorithm of search engines to do SEO in better way.

    There is no disadvantage ,if we follow the white hat seo techniques when google algorithm updated it affects the site,black hat seo is the main disadvantage of the seo.

    I don't think there are any disadvantage of optimal SEO. But if you do over SEO then there are too many disadvantages, like you can get your site penalized by google.

    Google is starting to hate (and penalize) over optimization whether it occurs on site or offsite, such as with over optimized signature links on forums.
