Guest blogging is a good way to get backlinks. But Matt Cutts warns against guest blogging just for backlinking as in you should be posting articles to inform rather than just getting a backlink.

I agree with the comment above that guest blogging is one of the most potent way of building links. However, getting a blog to let you submit a guest blog is not that easy. You can probably earn an invitation from a blogger that has not traffic in his blog. Ironically, it is you who will pump up the blog for the needed traffic. The best blog to guest in is a very popular blog so you get thousands to read your blog. But again, that kind of popular blog to publish your guest blog is hard to find. The most you can do is to read one good blog in that popular blog and make a comment with reference to your own blog. That can do the trick if your comment is not deleted by the blog owner.
