    SEO is a way to get the search engines attention. You're not paying for the listing in Google. But in a way being in the search engines advertises your site. I'd be hesitant to call it advertising for tax purposes in case of an audit, you'd have to justify an actual expense.

    I don't know if SEO can be considered a form of advertising. The purpose of SEO is to get in good ranking position.

    If you were to think of Google like a big directory, rather than a search engine, then your spot would be considered like free advertising.

    Do you mean like direct-to-consumer advertising designed to get actual people to click through on your links? If so, then yes, off page SEO serves the purpose of advertising your site/page in that way. Actually it serves both purposes advertising/SEO optimization equally well.

    If you are paying for SEO services, then it's not really free advertising, so then you will have to decide if the traffic coming from Google search is converting well enough in terms of ad clicks or product sales to make it worthwhile.

    Search engine optimzation is a slow process that takes awhile and you won't see the results for a long time. While direct marketing or advertising is quicker. For instance it's like saying, "Hey! Here's my ad/link, visit this site!" in an ad. And, you could get click throughs from people who were interested in what you had to offer. SEO is nothing like that.

    See SEO can be said as best form of advertisement --and i have reasons to say that:
    -You pay google adword to get your website on top and you pay on every click whcih is super expensive for you ..
    -while you get SEO for your website it remains on top of search engine if that is done properly for some good amount which is paid only once and then you have to pay maintainance only it means it cost you only about 30% of the charge it will cost if you go with adwords ..
    -So if your website is on top 3 with SEO it means qa lot of sales for you and thats it what you want ..so you can call SEO as best for of advertisement ..

    If Google is like the yellow pages of websites, then you could say that SEO is the way to get yourself listed in that phone directory (though in this situation the listing is for your url site not your phone number).

    SEO is not advertising as in promotion but it will result in traffic to your website. It might depend on what you are doing for SEO though as backlinking from blogs serves as direct promotion (assuming it gets real human visitors) as well as backlinking purposes for SEO.

    In a way, SEO can be considered advertising but not in the official way. SEO is actually not a transparent thing that no one will suspect that you are doing it unless they hit your backlinks when they are looking for a niche or they see your link when they do a search. It is a form of advertising your website when you spread the links and you only do that by doing a marketing of your website.
