Ads under an article work well?

I'd like to put ads and even Adsense at the bottom of my blog posts. But I don't know if they will perform well. What's your opinion on the placement of ads at the end of a post or article?

These ads will be the last thing a site visitor sees and your last chance to induce them to take action. The best use of Adsense ads are link units under, around and near articles.

For my eyes, the best ads is one that is placed on the side of the article so you can see it while reading the entire article. That is what I see in the online version of newspapers here and I think they have a point in that. However, the ad should not be annoying with bright colors. Another annoying characteristic of an ad is the blinking style that can really catch your attention negatively.
