What is your best spam prevention techniques?

Do you use certain mods to combat spam such as Askimet? Or, do you have a full time spam team on your staff to combat forum spam?

Of course, most forums use plug ins to prevent spam. But, the best spam prevention is a watchful and active staff that can catch spammers before they have a chance to infest a site.

Hiring a professional forum staff is the best way to keep the spammers from adding junk threads to your forum. These people will keep your forum clean and in good shape.

Use the ban hammer liberally to set a good example and to let potential spammers know that you are not afraid to ban when it comes to keeping order.

The office forum that my husband was supervising did not employ captcha because they think it is a turn off to the members. It is very easy to join their forum because of the no captcha. What they do is to monitor the posts for potential spam. And when they catch a spammer, they block the IP address so the spammer has to use another IP in case he would register again. It came to a point that spammers have run out of IP so their forum was peaceful for sometime.
