I'm interested in knowing more about how to get real traffic to a site or blog. Also, traffic bot software, whether or not it's providing real traffic and when someone would actually want to use it. I'm assuming there's a good reason to use a traffic bot. Who uses this type of software? Anything you can tell me would be good.

In order to identify fake traffic, you should start by reviewing a site’s analytics. Of course, Google Analytics is the industry standard, and as part of a comprehensive due diligence effort you should ask the seller of a website for Read Only access to their site’s Google Analytics.
Once you have been grated access to analytics, check the following factors in the AudienceOverview.
- Bounce Rate: An extremely high Bounce Rate may be cause for concern.
- Pages/Session: An extremely low Pages/Session may be cause for concern.
- Avg. Session Duration: An extremely short Avg. Session Duration may be cause for concern.
- New Sessions: An extremely high percentage of New Sessions may be cause for concern. Likewise, an extremely low percentage of New Sessions may also be cause for concern.
Three other Google Analytics’ Audience Overview metrics which can be helpful in identifying fake traffic are Language, Country, and City. You should be looking to see if the sessions are consistent with the content of the website. For example, if the website content is aimed primarily at an english language audience, but it is receiving significant amount of it’s traffic from primarily non-english speaking countries, this may be cause for concern.
Finally, in addition to analytics you can also check onsite factors for signs of user interaction. For example, if a site is claiming a high number of unique visitors but none of the articles on the site are being commented on, and/or the social networking accounts have little to no interaction, this may be cause for concern.
It is important to remember that no single metric will tell the entire story, especially if the website is receiving both real and fake traffic. Instead, identifying fake traffic depends on your ability to synthesis multiple factors and identify and investigate any suspicious data or irregularities. The more red flags which are raised the more skeptical you should be.

Well for that (real traffic), there are many ways of going about getting it. The first and most obvious way is with Social Media. That involves many methods using the different Social Media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Google+ etc etc. Each Social Media site has its own way that you'll use it to do so. Such as on Facebook you might start with your own Page and or Group and through promotion and marketing of it you can attract fans or members to it which you can post updates to what have you but it can take a while before you start getting traffic from them as you'll invariably need a lot of fans/members and have to do a lot of engaging before you really see a lot of traffic from them. It's the same with Twitter and Pinterest and the rest too. You'll need to establish yourself and build up your profile first, get a lot of followers, tweet, pin often, it takes time and doesn't happy overnight but if you're determined and stick at it you can use them drive traffic to your site more and more overtime. They might not come thick and fast at first but any traffic you get will likely be real people so its worth doing. Google+ is actually my favorite Social Networking site to get traffic from today, I get more traffic in a much quicker time from Google+ Communities than I do any other Social Networking site especially if you're in a niche that is super popular as there's so many communities around one subject you can post to. But yeah, Social Media is just one way of getting free traffic but there's many more!

Well, any traffic a traffic bot software would send you is just that, traffic bots which are never real visitors. They never convert well and you never get real clients, signups, optins or subscribers from them let alone clicks on your ads or sales of your products. I don't think I've ever come across a traffic bot software that does send real people traffic to you. They are usually all server generated or node generated in that they turn your PC into some kind of relay node which all the other users of that software are doing also. So you'll be getting traffic to your site from all the other users of that software on their PC. Such tools include the Chinese Jingling app AKA "Kiss of the Dragon". And there's an English version of that now called Traffic Spirit (ipts.com) which basically works in the same way. With that you can fake the referrer where the traffic is coming from and this even tricks Google Analytics as well which records it as coming from whatever source is set.

Well if you're looking for real traffic and you get sent this traffic by one of these bots or similar then you're not going to get the same engagement that comes from real people traffic. However, it can still be useful in its own way for several reasons. The first is because all that traffic can reduce your Alexa rating, and improve some of your other domain metrics too which can be helpful for your site in the long run. Also if you use it to send lots of traffic from the Social Media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc etc it will show as such in your Analytics and that can correlate with your rankings overtime.
And there are some people that are using some advertiser who are paying them by eCPM. So for every 1000 impressions on their ads they get, they make something from that. I knew a Russian guy once who was making a killing doing this and he used to tell me how he used to purchase 1,000,000 fake traffic for a few hundred bucks and make $5 per 1000 impressions. Obviously $5 x 1000 is $5000 so it used to work out really really well for him. The advertisers got their impressions, he got paid and everyone was happy.
So there's that aspect to it as well so that it can still be valuable and useful if you know how to use it to your advantage. However most of the best Cost Per Impression (CPM) Ad Networks are gone now although there are still some around. Just search Google for "advertisers that pay per impression". But most of them have minimum requirements for your site before they will approve your application now.

I would say that most traffic softwares or bots are generating fake traffic. You can usually enter the referrer yourself, so if you want traffic from Facebook for instance, you'll just need to enter "Facebook.com" as the referrer. That way, it will look like all the visitors are coming from FB, but in reality they are all fake visitors.
As I'm not an expert in this field nowadays it's quite hard to tell exactly what the benefits are, but I know that you at least could, a few years back, use this traffic to get paid if you were doing PPM. (PPM stands for "Pay Per thousand impressions" . The M originates from the roman numeral M, which means 1000. This means that every time an advert has been displayed a thousand times you will get paid. Notice that this is impressions and not clicks, which means that your visitors do not have to click before any payments will be coming your way. More information about this here.)
You could also (at least in the past) improve your Alexa rank using fake traffic. Can't tell if this works today though.
