    I think that manually commenting on relevant niches can be great building but any type of automated blog comments is utter spam.

    If you mean by blog comment linking is posting a comment on a blog that includes the link of your website, that is actually one good way of posting a backlink especially if the blog is very popular. That would mean a higher number of new traffic because the multitude of readers of that site will see your link. However, you have to be very creative in posting your link with your comments because you can be considered a spammer and that will definitely hurt your cause.
