Hello speedworker,

Some people only create blogs geared to their topic/etc. This is how they 'organically' gain leads and traffic to their 'master' website. Some people find this a great way to help with bringing in customers from the search engines. Try this method if it is something you'd like to do, blogging is fun regardless if you don't meet your goals, however you may get lucky and your blog may become a #1 source to go to for stuffs!

What do you mean by creating a blog for SEO purpose? Do you mean to ask creating a blog to promote your primary website and using it to optimize your website , or creating a blog to sell SEO expertise?
If you want to create a blog to promote your primary website, it is not a good idea. When search engines discover that both of the websites are from the same IP, they might punish you. Creating backlinks with your own websites will not generate high rank for your website. I tell this from my experience.
