Yes, excessive backlinks is very harmful for your website. If you do excessive backlinks for your website then google mark your site as a spam.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I have read in some discussions that too many backlinks is tantamount to spamming that can cause your website to be suspended by Google. But I haven’t read any discussion that showed proof of this potential suspension. For me, the more backlinks you spread in the internet, the better for your site because you get a lot of chances for other users to click on your backlink for a visit to your site.
