How useful are 301 redirects?

How useful do you feel that having a 301 redirect on your page is?

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

One of the most important techniques that a web master can use to help make their site more search friendly is to properly implement 301 redirects. 301 redirects can be used to tell a search engine that page "A" is really supposed to resolve to page "B", or we can even make it so that domain "A" should resolve to domain "B", if needed.

I did a whole site 301 in cPanel from an old site I was dropping that was similar to the site I was keeping and promoting. After about a month Webmaster tools show over 400 links to the new site from the old.
I have used a WP plugin to do 301's singularly to fix 401 errors also. A lot of ghost 404's will still come into Webmaster tools from old backlinks on other sites ECT.
I have read on the Webmaster forum where it's good to 301 the pages or articles you really need and then ignore the ones that keep popping up over time.
