i will explain using google example.

Google offer 'Adwords' , where advertiser pay to get their sites listed on google for certain keywords. (Paid Listing). Its really good and generate good sales for your website. But its COSTLY.

Now, second part, 'organinc search' . This must be your unlitmate GOAL. you can achive this by SEO. here , user type certain search words , and google find best sites related to that. higher your sites appears in search results, higher traffic you get.
