In order to increase your search rankings with social media you have to share your contents across various social media platforms. You will have to promote your links through social network as well as social bookmarking sites. Secondly, your post needs lot of engagements. For example, if you share on Twitter, you need to get likes, retweets, and comments. If you are sharing on G+ you need to get +1 as well as shares and comments. Engagements on your posts will send social signals. More social signals means better visibility in search engines.

From what I understand with reading the discussions in this site about SEO, you can also increase the rank of your website in the search list when you promote your website in social media. Especially when your promotional post in social media is shared by your friends, it has the tendency to go viral which contributes a lot to the evaluation of your website by search engines.
