    I've seen this method before and it's white hat SEO. It actually works and I'm working on it as wellfor promoting my product. Just buy a domain that has your keywords in it. For example if your keyword is "New York Deals" and can't buy newyorkdeals dot com then just add a number or add another keyword as well.

    All the good domains are taken and being sold in crazy prices. Don't spend too much money on this as you can get a similar visually looking domain for your product/firm. Then just generate backlinks and you might even be able to win the competition. Of course that requires of analyzing the competition.

    You can create websites just for the purpose of generating backlinks to your main website. However, this will not be a very effective backlinking method. The basic rule of backlinking is the site you are using for backlink should be high authoritative site and should be ranked higher than yours. If your backlink to the sites that are ranked lower than yours, your site might be even penalized and ranked lower in the search engines/
