We all start off somewhere, but that doesn't mean we are new to the industry, it just means we're new to the competitors. There are a few things you need to focus on when you're a budding entrepreneur, such as having the knowledge to help out others along their journey as well as understanding what is already going on day to day within your own industry.
Not everyone will get it right the first time, but there are plenty of things you can do in order to be seen as a professional in a short amount of time and boost your own sales. If you're going the affiliate marketing route, this will still work for you, except the part where you have to be seen as an expert because no one will really notice you when they land on the website you're sending them to lol.
When you're just starting out on your entrepreneur journey, you need to do a few specific things in order to stay on top of the industry, such as:
Always be the expert in the room
No matter what the conversation is, you need to be the all-knowing source of information that people can flood to when they need a question answered. Sure, you can answer whatever you want and hope you're right, but if you want to be taken seriously you need to be sure you're right when you answer. You need to be honest and straightforward when it comes to your industry, you can't sugar coat stuff too much because you could give people false hopes, and their screw ups could come back to haunt you since they could easily say "Well, John told me to do this because he said he was an expert!" which might not be true.
If you're unsure of the answer to a question you find online, don't BS your way through it just to get your name out there. Research what you're about to answer, even if you're familiar with the topic, and answer it in detail so the person asking knows you're knowledgeable about the topic.
If you can do this, you'll see people coming to you time and time again and even become paying customers 
Treat social media like your blog
When you're posting on twitter, facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc. be sure to treat these platforms like they were your own blog. If you can do this you will start to see more engagement on your posts since people will see you as more inviting within your posts.
The frequency of your posts matters as well, you can't just post once a month and think you're going to be seen as an authority, you need to be posting a couple times a week in order to randomly show up within the search results. Now, some platforms are better to post on 10 times a day while others are good for just 1 a week. Take Facebook and Instagram, both owned by the same company yet they're very different, and the post count for the two are very different. For Facebook, you can post once a week and be fine but posting to Instagram 20+ times a day will only increase your engagement and popularity over there. If you were to post 20 times a day on facebook you might be seen as a sort of spammer, which you never want, so be sure to figure out the average posting per day per platform before you get too invested into one platform that you might not want to.
Have a multi-platform plan of attack
You need to spread some love and not get stuck on one platform at a time. If you are only on facebook you'll be missing a massive amount of potential customers that might be on Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, etc. Now, you won't want to spread yourself too thin, so be sure you know which platforms are better for you to target so you're not wasting too much time on one that might not convert.
Once you figure out which platforms are best for you, start posting and see which platform your demographic is on most, then you'll really get an idea of which platform you need to target. The beauty of this is that you can do this and then start running ads on these platforms in order to boost your productivity and success
Always follow the hot topics of your industry
If you're on top of your industries news, you'll know how to answer any questions that may come in, which will make you seen as an authority in a strangers eye. This section ties into the "Always be the expert" section, but it's unique enough to get its own spotlight
If you're on top of the news, you'll be learning new things each and every day, which in turn might help you out more than you may think. Look at the SEO niche, if we weren't on top of the news and updates we would be left in the dust of those who are actually reading each day. We would all be running SEO software and building profile backlinks to rank #1 for the keyword "payday loans" haha We've read up on plenty of articles, which means we know what to do and what not to do, and now we don't run these pieces of software to boost our rankings
Be smarter and stay on top of the hot topics within your industry to always know what's going on.
In conclusion
Being an entrepreneur isn't an easy thing to do, mainly because no one will tell you what to do in order to make money, but you can do it if you keep your head up and get the work done. I didn't make much money for the first few years of my journey, but over time everything started to click and I eventually started profiting enough to go full time online and leave my full-time job I did everything I wrote above, which shows you this discussion is from real life experience, and I now have my own company and plan to start pushing a unique product to a niche I'm sort of familiar with I plan on being a millionaire sometime along my journey, I just don't know when right now haha

I like the point about treating social media like your blog, but I'd imagine that you mean like a somewhat toned down version?
I usually write up unique snippets of an article I've already written on my own website, then I'll use the "Read More..." trick and send them to my website

Also, you don't have to devote a lot of time to them. Just visit the sites in between working on your main biz projects. These sites are similar to being active on social media, only they pay you a few cents for socializing. They're fun and you meet a lot of people. I don't know about other people, but personally, when I see long, article length posts on social media, I'm not inclined to read them. Most people on social media are looking to find bite-sized content that is easily and quickly digestible, therefore I'd assume you'd have to adjust your own content to suit this necessity.
Sure there are people willing to sit through 800+ character posts on Facebook, but I don't think there are many of them out there.
