Some people ask me what SEO is. In as little words as possible I tell them it's the process of ranking up a website in Google so that it ranks number 1 or as close as possible to number 1 ranking position as possible.
And when it comes to SEO and ranking a site up using SEO it's still the same today as it has been then. You still have to do SEO on that site to get it ranked up, ranking higher, number 1 or as high as possible.
But obviously SEO and what it means has changed and evolved over the years. And the main pattern and emphasis has always been on quality and relevance. Where quality and relevance is the type of "backlinks" you have.
Basically showing that Google has and always probably will use the backlinks you have in its ranking algorithm. Though we know today that it also looks at on-page SEO as well. But your backlinks and "social signals" are counted as a "ranking factor".
And of course, every site, in any niche, needs its own unique SEO and SMM in order to get that site ranked up in the SERPs. It needs its own good on-page SEO, something that's usually sorted with a lot of great unique content in your niche.
Are SEO Backlinks even needed to rank up a site in the SERPs?
In fact, some people swear down that they rank up sites in the SERPs using nothing but sheer content only. Without even building backlinks. By just focusing on on-page SEO (content) only, they are able to rank up sites in time without even needing to do any off-page SEO or SMM at all.
You can find those guys videos on YouTube was watching it the other day. Search "how to rank sites without backlinks" on YouTube for the videos. This is one of them from some bloggers that rank up websites without ever building any backlinks.
Yes definitely it is since SMM is all part of SEO where you would do SMM such as Google+ Community posting, Facebook group posting etc as part of your SEO. And that's good to know I also do that and find it works well if the profile URLs are also keyword friendly. Since they are usually high authority sites, it's not too uncommon to get those profile URLs being ranked by Google for their keywords too which all links back to you. Definitely Google+ Community posting works though! When done consistently and not just wham bam thank you mam posts but actual interaction even if it's just dropping one liners on other people's posts sometimes. Great answer cheers! :)

Yeah I agree, sure, I guess it also depends on the competition like but you can rank a site with just content alone I know I've done it myself. But you can also rank a site up without content and just pure SEO and SMM too. For those that can't do a lot of content, SEO/SMM etc is the only other option! :)

That's interesting but true though, you can have and do all the best SEO/SMM in the world, you can have a great social media presence, but if your content sucks none of it really matters that much lol. Unless your content is so bad that it forces people to click out via one of your ads. I know people that make sites/blogs/content like that just to make people do that! :D

Yeah Kev those guys are awesome at what they do. They come up with an idea, form a plan and stick to it and over the course of time just keeps growing and growing and from just content only. And agreed, the more content you have on your site covering many different topics etc, the more likely your site is going to be crawled, indexed and ranked for that content and the more it will pick up natural organic visitors and backlinks, citations, social signals, shares etc on its own anyway. Although doing some SEO and SMM at the same time wouldn't hurt if done right and help you grow and rank up faster anyway right? :D

Yeah that's it, my point exactly. A bit of both can't hurt. Sure, you can rank up a site with just content alone. But it can't hurt to do some SEO and SMM promotion / advertising at the same time to drive more traffic back to it can I get an Amen!? :D

Well Google would use the same algorithm ranking factors on your site as any other regardless. So it would look at your off-page SEO (backlinks) and decide if the huge amount of them you have are natural or not (and it's got a lot better at doing that). And also look at your on-page SEO (your content, images etc) and rank your site in the SERPs accordingly based on where it thinks it should rank according to your backlinks and content. If your site didn't have great content / products / descriptions etc and just didn't provide a very good experience, Google would likely pick up on that too as it's well known that CTR and visit length plays an important role in ranking. So if it sees that people are leaving your site quick (since those people aren't liking your content) then your site would suffer as a result of it. This is why everything needs to be quality today from your on-page SEO and content etc to your backlinks too. Hope this helps? :)

Being more active on social media, not just sharing my links but sharing the links of others and making genuine relevant comments seems to be working as well. I found a comment accidentally via a Google search. That's when I realized commenting was important.
Posting to the Google Plus social network with proper hashtagging seems to be a good content strategy.
