Choosing between www and non-www URLs

Here is a discussion about the Difference Between HTTP and WWW

There are some websites that open only when you type http://anything.com

Those sites do NOT open if you type http://www.anything.com

That means, some sites just do NOT work if you use www; you have to type http only, without typing www

So, what’s the real difference between http and www in this situation? How come some sites work only if you type http but not www? And base on SEO, Backlink Building, and Indexing on Search engines, will there be any effect on a blog formally opening as http://anything.com then changed to http://www.anything.com.

I don't have really deep knowledge about this but as far as I know, you can configure the server so it goes to the correct website no matter what you type in. So, if you type www or http, if you set it up in the server, it will redirect you to the same page.

There are no SEO advantages of using either option though.

I am not really sure about this. I will be interested to see what some of the other responses are. It seems like most sites you can get to by simply putting in the www. url. It is just one of the options that we might have to experiment with.

I have not come across any site that uses either exclusively. I think in any case if you put in www or not it just redirects into the other. I usually never type the www anymore and it has always worked for me regardless of the site. I think it's just standard now for any site and it's probably a service provided by the domain host but I might be wrong and may just be missing something. I do think it's interchangeable nowadays though.

When you buy a domain, you can create subdomains. A subdomain is any text you want followed by a period and the domain you bought (eg: anytextyouwant.mysitename.com). "www" is a subdomain. Historically many servers used the www subdomain for hosting the website, and the domain for other purposes. Some servers still do this, but most people consider www depreciated, and only do it for legacy reasons. You will find some servers nowadays which host the website on the domain (eg: Twitter.com), rather than on a www subdomain. Such sites typically have www setup to redirect users to the domain, but not all do.

Hi all, thanks for response on the topic. From hindsight, site that uses www and site that doesn’t use www Domain Authority and Page Authority varies while also Majestic Trust and Citation flows always provide different result for www and not www. In the case of my blog, I’m having a Trust flow of about 30’s and Citation flow close to 40. In the case of Domain and Page Authority, the issue is also the same. What do we say about this then?

Google has learned how to treat the links based on both. The weight is given equally to both sides. And the things is that SSL and non SSL both have pretty much same weight. So not much of an issues in that context. Another thing is that working with those type of changes have not much impact on the analytics side.

I don't know much about this topic of discussion but I think I can manage to give a reasonable response.

I have a site and also a blog which i manually crawled via Google resources. During the course of my work I learnt that sites crawled and indexed with http:// show up same when searched on an engine. same goes with http:// without the www, same also goes with https. Correct me if am wrong, like I said I dont know much on the subject.

http or www both are just protocols. There is no big difference. However, https and http are different. https is a when you are .eusing SS: certificate or any other security certificate and when you are not using any certificate http is the default protocol.

There are no general difference between www and now www url. But there have some technical difference. Like on Word press plugin yoast using feature. When you hit a domain with www than you will get flexibility with DNS and if you hit an url without www than it will call be naked domain. There will be no cached cookies option.

It's not really a big difference. Most people are more concerned between http and a secured one (https). Most have both http and www.

According to what I have research WWW or the World Wide Web is a prefix to a certain name in order to identify that it is a web site that you are visiting. HTTP is the protocol used to transfer data to and from the website. WWW is the identifier that indicates that it is a web site and it uses the HTTP protocol.

I actually don't agree with this. In fact for most websites you don't have to type in http or WWW. So long as you roughly know the website you are looking for. Typing the websites name and adding a dot com/org/uk/ e.t.c should get you to the website you are looking for. I use google as my search engine, I have done so for many years. Over the years it has become very smart. This means you need to give it a small clue and it will search for what you are looking for.It is my opinion you don't need http or WWW to find a website.

I am not an authority but my understanding with the www is that it was the standard in the earlier days of the internet for the domain name. But the domain name format has been evolving that internet browsers have learned to use the domain name regardless of the www if there is or there is not. Even with the http sometimes I don’t use it and I just type the www and the domain name.
