When you work on a lot of websites and blogs, you start to see a common trend, and that is most of the blogs out there aren't actually that great. People think they're doing all the right things, but they're actually just posting a wall of content that no one wants to read. Everyone talks about how important their blogs are, but many of them don't show them enough love, and they become stagnant and don't really provide much value to the website it's attached to. One of the main reasons I put a blog on all of my websites is to pull in traffic from targeted and obscure keywords I wouldn't have thought to target, in order to get an additional sale or two. What a lot of people don't realize is that a blog can be the main reason you're actually pulling in traffic to your website and making money.
I may be a little straight forward in this post, but it's kind of needed since this is becoming an epidemic lol. Poeple forget that they need to post content consistently, distribute a decent amount of content, as well as find other websites and blogs to guest post on in order to build authority and traffic streams. Back before blogging was a thing for websites, or before websites were around, you had to call up your local newspaper and get a publication about yourself. Now, you can just write up all the content you want and add it to your own website, making you look like the authority within the niche and not really relying on the newspapers to do it for you. So you would think a lot of people would post to their blogs regulary, right? WRONG! Many people post once a month and think that's good enough, which it isn't.
Actually, the majority of blogs out there are lack luster and don't perform well, and here are the reasons they aren't great:
Infrequent posting habits
Many people won't post as often as they should be. We know that you might not have time to do this all the time, but there are services and plugins that can help you automate the problem.
The Problem:
Well, if you couldn't figure this one out, you're not posting enough. You might think that once a week is enough, but it's not. If you're posting once a week, you're actually publishing more content than 75% of the blogs out there who are publishing unique content once a month lol.
What you can do to fix it:
Write up a bunch of articles in one day and schedule them out a month in advance. Now, if you're planning to post once a day you'll obviously need to write up 30 articles, which could be a lot of work since each post has to be 1,500+ words. I would suggest investing 3 or 4 days into writing all of your articles so you don't get overwhelmed with this task. Try writing up 3 a day and use the 4th day only if you don't hit 10 a day in the first 3 days. Your 4th day is basically an add-on that you shouldn't always use, but is there in case something comes up in the first 3 days and you can't write any content.
After you have all of your content written up, you need to schedule it out over the course of the entire month. If you have a month with 30 days, you need 30 articles. Schedule them to go out once a day and then you can focus on other aspects of your business that need your attention 
There's no content distribution
Content distribution is huge when you're trying to build up your own website. You need to be doing it in order to give your competition a run for their money.
The Problem:
Bloggers will write up a great piece of content and expect massive amounts of people to come and read it, which doesn't really happen. I would say that around 99.9% of bloggers today don't try to distribute their content, and that's one of the reasons your blog isn't doing as well as it should be.
What you can do to fix it:
One of the best ways to distribute your content as quick as possible is to go on facebook and share your new blog post on your business or blog page. Now, you're not just copying and pasting all of the content to your facebook page, you're just going to post a URL with a snippet of information. After you do this, you will now set up a facebook PPC campaign and target anyone that is interested in that specific post. This will help you increase your engagement across the board and you'll likely get a decent amount of traffic going to your website and signing up for your newsletter
You don't have a laid out strategy
When it comes to increasing your rankings on all the search engines, you will need to have a pretty good authority. In order to gain authority, you need to have high authority backlinks aimed at your pages. To do this, you can distribute your content to other blogs and websites in order to get a dofollow backlink aimed at your website.
The Problem:
Many times I will come across a nice looking blog with a decent amount of content, but they lack backlinks which will increase their authority and then their rankings. You can't just post a bunch of content and think you're going to rank over your competition, you have to do work off of your website as sort of a 2 point attack.
What you can do to fix this:
You can go to blogs in your industry and ask them if you can post a long, high quality, post to their website for free. You will write it up, send it over to them to post, or even make an author account on their website and post the content yourself. You'll basically be a guest author and posting content that will help their rankings, as well as your own
The more high quality backlinks you can get, the better chances you'll have of ranking on top of the search results for your desired keywords
A lot of companies focus more on generating content for other company blogs than their own, and this is simply because they're targeting higher rankings in the search engines that will then send them plenty of high quality traffic Of course, they will write up plenty of content for their own websites, but they will only have one or two people doing this compared to teams of people posting on other websites in order to bring in traffic.
In Conclusion
You need to run your blog likes it's a content generating machine. Post a minimum of once per day, you can get away with 3 a week, but the more content you post the better your results will be. Work with other big blogs in your industry and build up your authority so you can increase your rankings over time from all the high quality backlinks you'll have coming in. You also need a well planned out strategy, so get that ironed out before you do anything.
