Is It Bad To WHOIS An Expired Domain?

There's a domain I've been checking on WHOIS for months now. It expired recently, and is in a grace period until September 2018. Is it bad to do WHOIS lookups on it?

I don't think there is any thing bad about whois lookup. You can definitely do so. And in fact some of the domain companies allow you to check through some of such grace period domains. Though some may not allow unless the domain is properly free from the grace period. There are some spam laws that prevent people from doing the lookup. But ask with the domain registrar, they may allow. I am not sure for all the companies though.

There is nothing wrong with doing a WHOIS search on any domain. The only people that may know that you did a WHOIS lookup is the site that you searched for it on. There are no laws against it but there may be some limits to stop people spamming the WHOIS lookup search system so make sure you try not too long at it too much.

No, I personally don't think that there is anything wrong with it. It is just information that is completely legal plus if the owner wanted he could just buy the WHOIS protection option so people can't just access his information.

Don't feel guilty over using it because many people do it. Use it to your own advantage and perhaps try to contact the owner if you are so interested in the domain.

Well this is interesting information to me. I didn't know anything about the whois lookup. You learn a lot of interesting things on this site that is for sure. It just seems like there are many people who know about this and use it as a domain search tool. Interesting!

I don't think there is anything wrong with looking up who owns a domain. Having said that most people these days use domain privacy so your not going to be able to get any information. I registered a new domain and I opted out of getting the domain privacy for one day and I was getting 3 to 4 calls a hour from people trying to sell me a website. I ended up getting the domain privacy and blocked all of the spam numbers.

Yeah, it is recommended to get a domain privacy, because almost every thing is vulnerable these day. And with the increase of spammers occupying cyber space, then one should make privacy a priority. I never even like the Idea of not privatizing my domain information.

Well, not bad, but not reccomended as some WHOIS sites actually log the requests. So if the domain name is good, for instance like a short english word or even a 3 letter .COM domain then those websites could purchase it and then you'll be out of luck. However, to get a domain name just to leverage over someone is just wrong. For instance, one time someone was actually able to register Google. They only had the domain for about 5 minutes but then it was taken from them. Also, in such instances you will need to watch out for trademarks because even if you do get a good domain name you need to make sure you secure it and that there isn't any copyright or trademarks on it because if so then they can easily get the domain name back, and you'll probably have to pay for costs of transfering, etc. I just don't trust WHOIS websites for the reason listed above.

You should not care about WHOIS site because they are only sites to check information about a domain that you're wanting to know.

Just like Everett said, many WHOIS websites log the requests and while none of the comments is meant to discourage you from checking a domain on WHOIS, we recommend that you don't overdo it.

Well, I see nothing there, it depends on you and what you want to do. And since it is not a crime, then I don't see anything bad there. It's just to check up information about what you want to buy nothing else. Except there are other things that comes with it. that can raise the red flag.

There is nothing wrong or bad in doing WHOIS on an expired domain that is only on its free grace period. It's just basically information sourcing, if you are lucky, the domain may allow it or the reverse could be the case but in all no harm is being done to either you or the expired domain.
