    Afaik you need to take permission by showing legal documents from the respective government to get EDU and GOV domain names.

    I believe you can still buy this domain from domain registrar but I believe this domain is strictly for government and institutional bodies I don't think an individual can purchase this.

    You cannot buy edu and gov domains for personal use. If you have a registered educational institute, you might be able to buy dot edu domain, however, it is impossible to get dot gov domain. Only government can register dot gov domain.
