Svchost.exe is taking up all my internet data

Hey guys, I think I've ran into a certain problem. My mom just bought a new HP laptop and had Windows 10 installed. I used it for a few hours for browsing the web then I shut it down to eat dinner. I used it again at around 11pm and noticed that I could not even open the Google homepage. I also tried to connect my smartphone to the internet and could not open any websites either.

When i disconnected the laptop from the wifi, low and behold, internet connection on my smartphone became blazing fast again. Therefore, the laptop was the culprit. I again connected the laptop to my wifi and opened task manager. I discovered that svchost.exe was taking up huge network bandwidth.

I don't have any idea how to fix this. A little help please?

I personally have no idea about this. Maybe one of the techy people on here will be able to help you. Have you done a google search on this to see if you can find some tips on how to correct this error? It isn't something that I have experienced myself.

Yep, I've Googled the problem and I saw a few solutions which didn't really improve the situation.

I turned off the location. That didn't work.

I turned off the background apps. That didn't work either.

I even turned off firewall because I saw somebody suggest that. But it also didn't work. Lol.

So here I am, still stuck. My mom still can't use the laptop to browse the web because it takes up a lot of bandwidth.

I am guessing this could be malware. As they attach to the existing process. And it makes it harder to remove them. So find out if the malware and anti virus scanner can show some output. In worst case scenario you may have to uninstall OS. So you can surely a good idea for the format in that case. You can see that most of the time internet throttling is due to the virus or malware.

This reminds me of a lecture that I had attended a long time ago about malware and viruses. When your computer is exhibiting unusual speed when you are doing a routine then that can mean something. The advice is to check the task manager to see what application is eating up the big chunk of the memory. If there is malware it will show that maybe one application is infected.

I think not all the time it is about virus. Some of the time the speed of the computer can go down if the temp files and other junk fills up. I have noticed that once we take care of those things it becomes easier for us to work with the data. It's not that easy though to find where the junk is so I use ccleaner.

If you just bought it, Windows will be trying to update, which involves downloading a few gigabytes of data. That's my guess.

That's a native windows programs and a tricky one for that matter, which host and contain multiple services, hence the data snap.
here is how i solved my many years ago , before i switched to Kali Linux
Analyze your system files using SFC. It identifies all corrupted system files. You can also repair Windows system files. How? Use this command:

Start -> cmd -> Right click and select “Run as Administrator” -> type “sfc /scannow” -> ENTER

Remember: The process is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista. It scans the whole system files and repairs all corrupted files (if any).

There may be a few reasons why svchost.exe is perplexing your computer. It could be virus and malware related and it also could be 'Anti-Virus related'. A virus attack sometimes causes multiple occurrences of svchost.exe to falsly execute multiple times. This slows down your computer and sometimes causes internet issues. You can run a program like Malwarebytes or an antivirus program like Avira or AVG. You should be aware that Windows 10 has a built in Antivirus that works fine with the system as well. This is where the second cause where the problem can also be 'Antivirus related' can occur. Most antivirus programs work well when they are the only antivirus program installed on the computer. Sometimes users install more than one antivirus and this results in problems as well. Check your computer to make sure that only one antivirus is installed. Remember that Windows 10 has it's own builtin antivirus as well and sometimes a new system comes preinstalled with a trial version antivirus like Norton antivirus or Kasperski or Trend Micro. It's best to uninstall trial versions and activate the Windows antivirus then check your computer's performance for improvement.

Alright! Thanks for all your comments and suggestions guys. I've found out the easiest way to limit the data usage of my laptop when connected to wifi. How did I do it? I just go to network connections, right click on the current wifi connection, and select "set as a metered connection".

This will limit the usage of the laptop and won't consume a lot of bandwidth. Problem solved!

This is an interesting case because this is the first time that I’ve heard of a suspicion that a computer is eating a lot of bandwidth. From my experience with networks, one reason for hogging the internet access is when you are downloading with a priority. The FTP will grab all the bandwidth it can just to finish the downloading process. But when your computer is idle and it is eating a lot of bandwidth then probably you have a virus there.

Svchost.exe is part of Windows OS. It helps manage other programs. If you run updates, delete un-needed programs, and restart the computer, it should calm down.

When you say using all your internet data, how much is that? If your data is very limited take the computer t a place with free wifi to complete its updates.
