    What do you have to look out for when buying expired domains?

    Hello everybody,

    I am sure that most of you have been tempted by buying a good, expired domain. They can go for very affordable prices so why not? But after going through one of the expired domain sellers, I have realized that I honestly have no clue about the possible dangers that can be hidden while buying such a domain. For example; what if the domain was previously penalized? How can I check that and avoid it?

    I'd love to hear some advice from our members. What do you have to look out and be careful about when buying expired domains? Which things should trigger the so called ''red alarm'' and make us not buy it?

    I think there are lot of things to watch out for.

    1. SEO penalty from google or bing or others.
    2. Banned adsense account on domain.
    3. Backlinks spam in webmaster tools.
    4. Bad ads on parked page.

    So as you can see there are many other things to watch out for. You just have to find out what applies to you. And how you can change the same there. I personally don't see the use of expired domains.

    Those are very good points so thank you for listing them. So, would you suggest that I simply avoid the expired domains? It seems like they have many easily missed ''traps'' that could backfire after you purchase them... I am not sure.

    Also, is there an actual way to check if an expired domain has been previously penalized or not?

    It's a difficult choice because I'm sure there are many expired domains out there that would be great investments. The problem is knowing which ones are good to invest in but that is the risk that you have to take I guess. Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether or not you can check if an expired domain has bene previously penalised. There is a site that checks if your site has been penalised by Google but I don't think it is reliable, it said my site was penalised for some reason even though I know that it is not.

    Some of the things you should consider are:
    whether the domain is blacklisted by Google or not
    age of the domain
    commercial value of the name
    SEO factor
    the extension. Even though extension does not matter when it comes to seo, people perception matters. people think dot come to be more valuable than any other extension.

    I completely agree that the domain's extensions matter greatly. People will always remember .com websites far easier than any other extension and therefore it has a higher value.

    Why is the age of the domain important by the way? I didn't know that. But thank you for the tips!

    In case of expired domain I shall only go for to buy the domain as early as possible. Every domain have a value in this world after buy. After buy any one is owner of the domain. But after expiration any one cna buy the domain if you do not buy within a few hours.

    Came to also learn from this topic,because i intend going into this in no time.I read from a site that expied domains buying and selling is quite lucrative but one should consider the domain name to use it can still be useful.

    I think it better to google the name of the domain and see what comes up and you can research about the domain name.

    I would be concerned about doing something like that, because you don't know anything about the history of what has gone on before with this domain and the site. There are a few things to be concerned about one of which is the history of what has gone on with the site!

    Always check for the expired domain name at Google to ensure that the domain is not banned. If it is banned from Google search engine, don't buy it because it is waste of money. People will not be able to search your domain even with the keywords.

    When I will create my own site, I will not buy an old domain unless it is very important that I have to get that domain like maybe if my site is personal that will carry the name of a person. Using an old domain has risks so you have to investigate and the research will take a lot of time because there might be bad backlinks although I don’t know if those links can still be attributed since there is no more website.
