    XAMPP for live website

    In choosing the web server package and other packages, I kept getting told that using XAMPP is not a good idea mainly because it is not secure. I am wondering you agree with this and give your reasons why do you think so. XAMPP has been a great tool whenever I want to test a website function internally within a company project or when I use it in a classroom setting but I would like to know what is the drawbacks of using it solely for live website.

    Also, can you give me an alternative to XAMPP that is secure, and well-suited for my needs. Your input are really appreciated.

    You should take a small VPS which you can install all web server components as Apache, PHP, mysql, emai...etc so you can test your website on it.

    There are many VPS offers with low prices so I don't think it is difficult to get one at this time.

    I also agree with you!

    I even use a VPS on Digital Ocean with Easy Engine, and I'm very satisfied with that.

    I never tried Easy Engine but used Digital Ocean, it is pretty good but still having more good ones out there with low budget and we can choose for our websites without using a local host server.

    Because when you finish on your localhost, it will consume time to transfer to live website.

    Thank you for your suggestions. I think it is out of habit that I do things on local host even if it is just minor updates or slight tweaks because I think it is nice to have a local copy in case some thing happens. After doing it for a while, I just got used to it. However, I understand that downloading and uploading can be inefficient too so using that approach without local host might be interesting.

    XAMPP is designed for the development version. Not many people consider it for the live version of the hosting. The reason being the default permission on the XAMPP are open with ports and other passwords. So anyone with some knowledge of the security can hack it. So one has to check out if the development through the XAMPP is of any use. There are people who take the hosting route, I'd recommend going with bitnami for this case.

    Thank you very much for your information. In other words, going with external hosting is recommended than tweaking the layers and permissions XAMPP itself, right?

    A lot of people in my group have been recommending bitnami but I have never worked with it myself. I think this is a good time for me to try that as well.

    Yes because you don't want to keep your machine on all the time. You have to also watch out for the bills of the internet and the electricity. In fact by making use of the external server, you can get rid of all the issues that you may face on server side. You can use bitnami for local hosting. But I'd suggest go with external host if you have long term plans.

    I think a development stage of a website can be done in free platform so you will not be beset with budget constraints. This reminds me of the time when I was with the team of research on our planned website for the our company. We were using a paid hosting because during that time there were no free services yet. To think that bandwidth was very expensive, you can imagine the amount that we had spent just for the testing.
