If you are running a community forum then you will need some moderator to moderate topics/replies and help users when they will need. For me I didn't hire any moderator. I have choose moderator from my forum members and providing them some extra features. But I am not paying them and they also don't want to get paid for this. However, I believe that many forum admin hire people for moderating their community forum. I will like to if you guys are paying to your moderator. If you are paying then let us know how much and how they work...I hope you guys will share your experience of paid moderators.... 
Yeah that's it. If you can find people that are passionate about the same things, the same interests and passion in the thing your forums are about then the chances are they would do that job for free since it's in something they enjoy doing. It all really depends on how much work involved there is that needs to be done but for average sized forums, if there's a bunch of moderators, the work load is quite low so that it's not so much a "chore" as it is just a pleasure for them to do. Besides, being a forum moderator usually comes with some additional benefits and perks and the respect you get as a mod too. :)

I've ran several forums in the past, some small, some fairly large, and I've been a moderator for several fairly big forums in the past too. In all that time, whenever we've needed mods, or they've needed mods, I've never known a time when we had to pay moderators to do forum moderating. This is usually because it's a job that comes with a little power and respect so a lot of people enjoy that side of it and would do it because of that. Of course, there is a lot of work to do and the moderators are only few, then paying a moderator to do all the duties that might involve a lot of work to do would be fair. I wouldn't imagine the pay to be very high for that kind of work but it would certainly be an incentive if you didn't have many mods to do all that moderating work that needs to, or might need to be done on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis. But you can usually just make a new thread advertising that you need moderators and if you have a lot of good members on your forum and it's quite active, you usually get people jumping through hoops for the opportunity lol. :)
