It has been clear to me for some time now after the Google Rank Brain update that Google search stopped relying on keywords to figure things out and actual rank websites.

In turn, it has taken a new approach, figuring out how well you talk about offering content on a complete subject and ranking you accordantly.
The "subject" itself might contain a lot of different keywords, some similar in form and meaning, synonyms or other keywords that are totally different.
For example, if you are talking about a certain medical condition, chances are you will find a lot of close variations, synonyms, and popular terms. You need to show Google your content haves it all, that its talks about the whole subject and the user doesn't need to make additional searches to find whatever he or she is looking for. Also, for the certain example, you may also need to include other subheadings like "treatment" or "symptoms", all this is expected of you by Google and if you fail to deliver Google will rank you accordingly.
So if Google is already processing everything in terms of "subjects" why are the majority of SEO gurus still tell us about "keyword research"? In my opinion, we need to take thing to a next level and make "subject research" instead.

How you supposed to think about stuff now then? When it comes to ranking a website. You gotta do this, you gotta do that. You gotta show Google your content has this and has that. Okay let's say we take this seriously right. You say, we should focus less on keyword research and more on subject research. But subject research is basically just researching the subject you're writing about and targeting with your site. You still have to do keyword research before you can even do subject research. They are both very similar and intertwined with each other.
I don't know man, this sort of stuff could give an aspirin an headache you know??
It's no wonder so many people give up early on their site! LOL Hmm not sure what to think tbh mate!! I wouldn't say that "keyword research" is dead though. Far from it. I get what you're saying in how Google looks at how your site content is made up and how those other synonyms of words would play a role in how it determines just how right your site is for the person searching. But at the end of the day, I think this is just a bunch of Hocus Pocus made up by those gurus to try and make themselves look like they're talking clever and get you to buy into their schemes. At the end of the day, it will be a sites backlinks that determine how a site is ranked, the keywords that are used in those backlinks, the relevancy of them, the age of them and the sites that are linking to you etc that play a role in your rankings and not the subject or whatever right?
