    Does what you wear effect your performance as a freelancer? Can you dress for success?

    If you work from home, are a WAHM (Work at Home Mom) or a WAHD (Work at Home Dad), does what you wear have any effect on how productive you are? Apparently it does!

    When you wake up in the morning, it can be very tempting to sit at your PC while still wearing your pj's, drinking endless cups of java and stuffing your face with junk food all day long. But that's not really healthy for your mind and body. Where as if you get up, get washed or have a shower, then dress smartly as though you was dressing and prepping for an important business meeting or something, that will put you in a much better mindset for the day and actually increase your productivity!

    According to a study experiment done by ALifeofProductivity.com, what you wear during the day when working at home, has a massive effect on how productive you are! The experiment carried out shows that what you wear during the day, can have an effect on how productive you are in that day, week or months.

    Here is what they found;

    • The clothes you wear are highly symbolic of the type of person you are and how you will feel about yourself in your day to day life. Just like certain things around you can make you feel good about yourself, or not. The clothes you wear while working at home can impact just how much work you get done. And feel like doing in that day.
    • The better you dress and the more emphasis you put on how you appear, the more motivated you'll be to get the work that needs doing, done. That applies to how you are with and around people as well. Dress like a slob and you'll appear like a slob and likely act like a slob lol. But dress smart and you'll feel smart and think and act smart!
    • The clothes you wear should be compartmentalized. What this means is, what you wear at work shouldn't be what you wear at home. What you wear at home is what you like to relax and feel casual in. You wouldn't wear your pj's to work, but you would dress smartly and likewise, by doing so, you'll be more productive for it.

    However, on the flip side, if you feel like you're more productive wearing your pj's then wear your pj's! But generally speaking, dressing smartly, whether it's wearing a suit and tie and polished boots. Or just wearing something casual you feel comfortable in. That will generally increase your productivity throughout the day and make you a better, more efficient and faster WAHM or WAHD. Or just a work from home freelancer!

    What do you think about this? Do you like to dress smart when working from home? Or do you prefer just to wear whatever you want as long as it feels comfortable?

    I totally agree with this Mike. The fact that I have to get up early, get dressed and take my kids to play school in the morning I think plays a big role in my favor. While I don't exactly dress for a smart office environment I do have to be presentable enough to walk into the play school to take my little kids to their class rooms.

    I usually wear casual clothes, but I like the fact I am dressed and ready for action when I get home. On the weekends I always go lazy style. I stay in my PJ's and night gown till late morning and drink lots of coffee before I get dressed!

    Wow i work in my Pj's all day sometimes does that mean im a loser? That makes me laugh idk how true this is as far as i go. I agree that clothes can make a difference in your attitude and your confidence but my productivity is usually the same. The thing i notice with dressing up and not dressing up is the amount of time it takes me to get from my bed to my computer. If i don't have to get dressed and pick something to wear i can usually get my day started faster. I don't totally stay in PJ's though because i have to go out and work in my garage.

    My garage is super cold sometimes depending on the day and i have to wear a Dickies one piece snow suit to stay warm. Yes my Pj's under and im done lol! Unless i have to go out or meet a client face to face i do not usually get dressed for work. I love the stats and all of the research into this its awesome. Thank you for sharing it was an interesting read indeed.

    In all honesty, when I first started out online.. When I got a few sales here and there, I didn't care about it at all. About my clothes that is. - However, when I started out working full time, I actually worked in front of my computer in a suit. I did this to get the feeling of "going to work" so to speak. And I can't see anything more professional for a salesperson than working in a suit.

    Sure, I totally understand why this might sound lame or whatever, and people laughed at me when I told them about it.. And it's okay. I'm fine with that. Because in the end, I knew that I was doing a better job, as long as I was dressed appropriately.

    Nowadays I don't care. At all. I work in a dirty T-shirt or in an expensive shirt. It really doesn't bother me nowadays and I can't say it has any major effect either.

    I totally agree on this! Getting dressed and having a routine definitely helps! I'm way more focused and open minded to new ideas and eager to learn a lot more things since I'm not a full-time freelancer and I have to go to work in an office.
    I remember sometimes I would just dress in a casual way at home, even if I could do everything from my PJs, dressing up helped me get a different mindset "no I mean business and I'm going to get work done". Working from my PJs was depressing, at least for me.

    There is a saying that the way we dress is the way we are always addressed, so I think I ensure I dress nicely in the course of my work as a freelancer for I believe that it is the best way to go about working on the internet instead of having to dress anyhow I want.

    I have my workspace at home and I treat myself as a worker when I am working. I have my snack time and rest period too. But with the clothes, I am just natural, meaning I wear casual clothes that I am comfortable with. That's one advantage when working at home, you don't need to dress up, no makeup needed, just plain comfort and convenience.

    Well, for me I like dressing smart even while working from home, it doesn't matter that I'm working from home.I wouldn't want to wear clothes that are tight fitted that wouldn't give me the comfortability needed to work.I wear what will give me space and comfort to do my work well.
