    Registered User Spam on my website?

    I've just had a look at the users on my website and there are loads of people that have registered usernames like "Online Business Opportunity" and obvious spam things.

    Why would people do this? Would this count as a backlink?

    I am busy deleting all the rubbish users on my website. Has anyone else encountered this?

    Yeah it's a common issue but easily dealt with in a number of ways. Just Google "WordPress registration block" and that should point you in the right direction for ways on how you can actually deal with it and prevent it from happening.

    And no no, was just traveling back from town. Just doing some pre-christmas window shopping lol Registered User Spam on my website?

    Oh man I still have all my Christmas shopping to do, this is my most unorganized festive season ever!

    Ok yes I will do a Google search. Here's the strange thing, none of the users have a website url included in their profiles? Oh well strange as it may be I need to put a stop to that.

    Well this is interesting i never heard of of someone making a user account with a spam name. I guess if they post comments that are visible on your site it could direct people looking for those keywords rite to your site. Looks like Mike pointed you in the rite direction i Google it and i found a few plug ins that you can add to your word press account. Mike you window shopping or are you actually buying stuff!?!?!? buahahaha tis the season to go broke for sure.

    Hi Jkeyz2 I am confused by this now because they have not entered a website url and neither have they posted any comments so it would appear that there is no logical reason for them to be doing that right?

    I can't see that it would give them any benefits at all.

    Do you have a spam blocker plugin? Maybe that is what keeps them for commenting and posting links. Nevertheless, those are all boots made with black hat SEO techniques.

    Thanks Cristian, yes that is what I thought, it must be bots and then you are probably right,they want to spam but they get blocked.

    Yes. Automated tools that seek out Wordpress sites to register on them so they can get a profile back link from the built in authors feature of Wordpress. If you have author accounts disabled then they won't be able to create a link. You can also edit the fields that authors have so that no URL field option is given to them. Or you can also disable registration or use Google captcha on the registration page. I used to use SweetCaptcha plugin for that and it stopped all automated registrations dead in their tracks. That's a free plugin and was a long time ago so not sure if it still works but you can check it out. Sorry I can't give you much more than this at the moment as I'm currently traveling and using my phone lol. Registered User Spam on my website?

    But there are lots of things you can do to prevent those such types of automated registrations.

    Thanks Mike, no that's good enough for me. I just wanted to know mainly why people do spam like that with user registration and you've made it clear enough for me.

    I will look into how I can prevent that in future. Thanks for your feedback. Are you on holiday already?

    I guess those registered users that appear to be spam are only waiting for the right time when the moderator is asleep so that they can do their spamming. I have been to a forum that was clean until the moderator took a vacation of several days. Maybe the spammer sensed the absence of the moderator so it started its attack. Right now there is another site that seems to have no moderator and there are several spam posts.
