8 Elements any good headline must contain

8 Elements any good headline must contain
I really started to get into general and classic marketing lately but also copywriting, I'm finding the actual content triggers very important and nothing is more important in my opinion when it comes to a piece of content than the headline.

So what are the essential elements needed in any successful headline?

  1. It needs to be specific;
  2. It needs to address the needs and interests of the potential customers;
  3. It needs to trigger curiosity;
  4. It needs to be credible - (not realistic, credible);
  5. The headline need to also promise a benefit but at the same time also promise a certain type of information, like news or a story;
  6. It needs to be simple and clear;
  7. Your headline will need to reflect the targeted potential customers - (don't be generalist);
  8. It needs to be directly related to your product and brand.

What other essential elements do you think the perfect headline must have?

GREAT stuff Cristian! You see what I done there? I CAPITALIZED a word to make it stand out more. That's another element that a headline can use and it can have a massive effect on how powerful or potent that headline is and can be amongst the people reading it.

I like to use headlines that are short, sweet and to the point but that also use a call to action. However a call to action doesn't necessarily have to be asking the reader to do something so specifically, but it can be used in a more subtle, sub-conscious way.

You could say what it is, then put something like "click here to read the story now". Or you could put something like what it is and then "find out how you can to". That sort of thing. It's subtle and isn't as blatant as asking people to click now but also plays on their emotions.

I think any headline that plays on your emotions and calls you to have to click on it is the best type of headline if you're talking about from a marketing and promotion perspective. But I like my headlines to make sense and not look like click bait! LOL 8 Elements any good headline must contain

Thank you Cristian. This was a great topic!

I personally don't like click bait titles at all, but I can totally see why people are using them. And that's also why I'd still recommend to use them, as long as you use them properly. You shouldn't promise someone $5000 overnight if you made $1 for instance. That's bogus.

However, a headline to me should make me curious. Even better if it goes to a personal level. I also like headlines and titles that feels personal, to me specific, and not to people in general. And sure, that's hard to get, but it's amazing when you reach that level on your titles.

For instance:
"Do YOU have this or that problem?" and not "Do this to get rid of this problem".

The first one is more appealing to me personally. As one person is different to another, it's a "hit and miss" game when you're doing titles and headlines, as long as you don't study and learn how to do it properly. Which you totally can!

Even though all ways lead to Rome, you can still tweak things and change it for the better, so people will use the road you want them to. They just need a little push in the right direction.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh I love this Cristian, I bet you've been reading about headlines in that awesome book you've been talking about right?

I agree with Mike, I think a headline should be as short as possible and in that way can grab the attention of the reader as quick as possible. I'm sure this would go under your point number 6 of being simple and clear.

I would say that using power words in your headline is also important since these trigger the readers emotions and urges them to click and this is vital in a headline.

I have found that since I spend some more time on writing my headlines I am getting a lot more interest on my website than I was before.

Very well written points there. A headline cannot be too lengthy, and it needs to trigger some interest, and if possible curiosity. Otherwise, if people are not intrigued with the headline, they are not going to get anywhere near the content it is presenting. Using that checklist you gave there to create a headline is really helpful.

Awesome these are all great tips for a good headline. I like this type of content that helps people build themselves up as writers and branders. Headlines ate probable one of the most important things when it comes to marketing your blog website or other content. When a person comes to your website or is checking out your book the first line of marketing offenses is your title. I think you did a good job at capturing all of the important parts of what a headline needs. Everyone here had some good additional information to what a good headlines need and i think with this topic someone can really get a good idea of what a headline needs to be perfect. Thank You for sharing this was a good topic!

The headlines you write differs according to the publishing platform. When you are writing for the internet, your headline should be a long tail search term or at least use the keywords, keyphrase. However, in the print medium, your headling should be something that sounds interesting, it should tell what the content is about without revealing too much.
The elements such as encourage curiosity, give the basic idea about the content, sound interesting, catchy etc. in the title are equally important for each publishing medium, however, there are some unique features of each publishing platform.

Creating titles and headlines is my weakness. Sometimes I would write a headline that I thought was great but later on when I would read the entire manuscript, I would feel surprised that the headline is lacking in angst. Yeah, I agree with being specific and it should be directly related to the subject. With the arousing of the curiosity, I know it is easier said than done because I think it needs talent which unfortunately I don’t have. That’s why I am trying to learn a lot by reading.
