What counts as a Social Signal these days anyway in the eyes of Google?

Hello all. As we all know by now, with some certainty, social signals count! When it comes to good rankings. It's long well considered that Google does use your social signal count when determining your ranking in the SERPs.
What counts as a Social Signal these days anyway in the eyes of Google?
But what actually counts as a social signal that counts? Is it just things that happen on social media sites? You know like likes, shares, reshares, comments etc. But what else is there? And what are they for each social media site?

I've tried to think about what a social signal could be from each top social media site. Here is a list of some social media site and what might count as a social signal. A social signal is basically any form of social activity of some kind.

Facebook
Shares: when someone share something on Facebook (your website).
Reshares: when someone reshares that share on Facebook again.
Likes: when someone likes something that was posted on Facebook.
Comments: when someone comments on something shared/posted on Facebook.
Fans: anytime someone likes your page and becomes a fan.

Twitter
Tweets: anytime your site is tweeted about and appears on Twitter.
Retweets: anytime said tweet is retweeted on Twitter.
Likes: anytime someone likes or favorites said tweet or tweets.
Comments: anytime someone leaves a comment on a tweet(s).
Followers: the amount of followers that you have.

Pinterest:
Pins: anytime a pin is pinned to Pinterest with your website link.
Repins: anytime a pin is repinned somewhere on Pinterest.
Likes: anytime someone likes a pin.
Followers: the amount of followers that you have.

Instagram
Posts: links can't be used in Instagram posts (although people still do). But it would likely be;
Followers: how many followers you have.
Likes: how many likes all your posts have (collectively).

Snapchat
I'm not sure how Google can see this. Does anyone know how or in what way Google can use Snapchat to as a way of knowing how to rank a site?

LinkedIn
Posts: anytime your website is posted on LinkedIn in some ones post.
Reposts: anytime your post is reposted to someone else's profile.

Tumblr
Posts: the amount of posts you have on Tumblr (how many times your URL is shared)
Reposts: how many times the posts are reposted (reblogged) on Tumblr.
Likes: how many times your posts or posts with your URL are liked.
Followers: the amount of followersthat you have on Tumblr.

YouTube
Videos: how many times your link appears in how many videos.
Likes: how many times that video or videos have been liked.
Subscribers: how many subscribers are subscribed to your channel.

Google+
Posts: how many posts your website URL appears in.
+1: how many times those posts are +1'd (liked) by people.
Circles: how many people you have following you in your circles.

Those are just some of the ways that those sites can be used and some or all ways in which they might be used by Google or signals to Google as social activity.

What other social media sites are there that Google might use as a signal to know how to rank a site (based on the guessumption that Google uses social signals as a ranking qualifier) and what social activities would be considered a social signal for each?

By the way, if you've ever wondered what actually counts as a social media site, this social media prism 2016 is a great way of finding out and a good way of finding high authority social media sites you can get on to actually get social signals from those sites!

I have a question for you Mike regarding social signals. I add all my content to my social media software so that it continues to be shared on social media for... well forever I guess.... or until my social media software breaks?

So does each and every one of these shares continue to be counted as a social signal? Is this a bad thing to do or a good thing to do?

I continue to get loads of traffic from my social shares which is awesome, so I would think it is a good plan.. it has been working well for me anyway.

I believe getting traffic from social media websites can help with your rankings. Shares, likes, pins and stuff like that can help you, even more, Google learned to look at all this stuff but it's not really a ranking factor as far as they want us to believe.

I think you need a huge number of shares for Google to take your social signals into serious consideration when it comes to rankings, I mean if you have 5 shares for some pieces of content and your competitor has none you won't rank in front of him just because you have 5 shares. But if you have something like 1000 shares, yeah, I'm pretty sure Google won't ignore all that plus the traffic you are getting.
Google wants to provide the best experience for their users and if you page already attracts loads of people from social media websites, Google will see that as a reliable experience and will rank you accordantly.

Yeah definitely it's a numbers game. Where bigger numbers outrank smaller numbers. Because that's really the only way they can base their algorithm on it. By the amount. Just by how many social media sites you do actually have those shares on and as well as how that amount is made up and how many shares the reshares got and that kind of thing. One way of knowing which site is the most relevant is by looking at the social signal count as it's a massive sign of whether it's popular, or not. But of course, other things come into play when it comes to ranking a site but definitely social signals count! And you can take that to the bank! Oh yeah it's all good Lynne. Each activity like that would be considered a social signal. A signal to Google that your site has some social activity. Whether it's a new post to one or more of your social media accounts using a software that just keeps on going and going. Or someone then likes and or shares that post. Either on the same site or on another social media site. Really, it's how many times your site is being shared across the spectrum of social media sites. And how many times it's getting reshared and liked and reliked, commented etc etc. What counts as a Social Signal these days anyway in the eyes of Google?

And yeah it's awesome when you see success from your social media work. And it can be addictive and make you create more content and post more stuff and over and over again until you're dead! lol What counts as a Social Signal these days anyway in the eyes of Google?

I hope that doesn't happen until at least 2050. And if it does, and we're both still here, I'll buy you a pint! lol What counts as a Social Signal these days anyway in the eyes of Google?

Happy new year Lynne! What counts as a Social Signal these days anyway in the eyes of Google?

Thanks Mike... and yes I know what you mean by it being addictive. I think making money online is addictive lol, I just love it... but also the process of trying to get things pumping on social media and also to get content ranked.

I might be doing well but whenever I see a huge spike in a graph like my analytics I get all excited and I work harder than ever to see how high I can get it to peak at LOL.

Oh that will have to be a big chocolate milkshake pint for me... yummy!

I hear you Lynne! Well it's something we can all relate to. For all of us that do this and that. But I'm the same! I'm like that, looking through my keyword search history, then looking on ways I can expand on that by adding more content based on those keywords and building it up more and more. But that's just part and parcel of being a webmaster, blogger or affiliate. I used to earn through Google Adsense mainly but when I flipped all my sites my earnings dwindled up! I need to get back into it and am thinking of starting some news or info type site I can use it on again or some niche. I'm usually always trying new sites with new niches like Hatchimals lol But haven't done a Hatchimal site. I wont either. I'm sick of the things LOL ;)

I have never heard the idea that Page rank is effected by social signals per se, and I don't think it is. Some social networks generate do-follow links and those do of course effect page rank. But that is all. That's all Google says counts and I have no reason to think otherwise.

Does this mean that posts in Facebook gets noticed by Google and it affects the ranking of the website in the search list? Maybe Facebook posts about your website can be considered SEO method which adds positive points to the website in terms of search engines. I guess it is not only Google that is taking in consideration the social media signals but also other search engines for purposes of ranking in the search list.

In social media platforms what counts as social signals are any kind of action, reaction and interaction of the poster and the reader.
