Is there a market for short novels and stories? (Fiction, stories for kids, erotic novels etc.)

Hey guys,
I just want to ask, do you think there's a market for short stories in general?

Obviously it will all come down to supply and demand, like with any other thing, but I'm curious to find out. I won't say that I believe that I'm a good writer, but I definitely believe that it's easier to write shorter stories than longer ones. - And most people would probably agree on this. That being said, when you're writing short stories, there's also the feeling of leaving things out I guess. So it's a bit different writing style than what I'm used to.

Do you have any experience with this? - Where did you sell/publish your stories? - And did it work out well for you?

Yes definitely. Most popular kids story books are only like 5-10 pages. You know the types, with really large font that are just short stories. I used to have loads of them as a kid and I see a lot of families still buying them for their kids today. But some short stories are really great fun for the kids who like to read them over and over again. As opposed to 100 page books!

In fact, there is probably more demand for them today than ever before since we're living in a generation where it's all about time and getting knowledge as quick as possible. So if they can read a whole short story in 5 minutes, most kids of today would rather prefer to read a book like that than one that takes a week to read.

This would really all depend on the story itself and how much fun it was to read. But if you can create killer short stories that are fun and entertaining as well as informative to read then there's no reason why you can't sell them as either paperback books or otherwise.

I don't actually have any experience writing short stories like that myself but I'd imagine it's just a matter of getting into it and learning as you go which works best. You could write a short story about Meryl the Meerkat or something. Add some cute pictures of meerkats and publish that and there's no reason why that wouldn't sell or even become a best seller. If the story is fun and informative/educational at the same time.

Yes I believe that there is a market for that for sure. Certainly all kids books are quite short aren't they?

My ebook that I wrote was more of a short story than a full length novel. A novel is usually around 120 000 words or so? My ebook was 22 000 words so it wasn't exactly a very long ebook.

My ebook has sold a good few copies now so I think it worked well for me. I was quite worried about the length actually and I asked for advice. The thing is that a story is as long as it needs to be. I said everything that I needed to say in my ebook. Trying to make it longer would not have worked for me. I didn't want to waffle on or try and add in more content for the sake of length.

I have a friend who writes erotic stories for his pastime. When I asked his intention, he said that there will come a time that erotic stories will be in demand so he is stocking his archive with his creations. In the movie industry, there were 2 times when sex movies were so popular. The first one was circa 1970 where sexy starlets became a star because of their semi-porn movies. In the 1990s, that same trend emerged again. With written stories, I guess it can also happen because that writer said that they used to have erotic stories in small booklets circa 1960.
