Do you think that streaming services will take over traditional cable TV?

Over the past few years we have seen the emergence of various tv streaming services and digital media players. There are countless possibilities actually, from Netflix and Apple TV, to the more recent Sling TV and Playstation Vue.Considering that these options are gaining popularity, and seeing that they tend to be much cheaper and more flexible to traditional cable TV, do you think that within a few years' time there may be the downfall of cable TV? Personally, I do hope that these services will abound and become even more competitive and affordable, because I cannot stand the prices and rigidity of cable TV.

That's a good question and I totally believe that Streaming services will take over. I never watch TV anymore. I usually end up on Twitch or youtube, and whenever I feel to watch a movie or something, I usually go with online streaming too. I hate commercials on TV and here in Sweden we have like 5 minutes of a movie and 10 minutes commercial break. Then another 15 minutes of the movie and 5 minute commercial break.. And this goes on and on and on and on.. I just can't stand it. I'd rather buy movies, which I actually did in the past. I bought DVD's more or less every day, just to avoid the commercials. - But that's rather expensive in the long run. Do you think that streaming services will take over traditional cable TV?

I think that a lot of broadcasting, if you're in the United States, is owned by some companies, or sister companies that own online streaming platforms. So even if a company was to use revenue from traditional media, they can earn it back via streaming technology. I think the days of regular programming are over, and done for. The TV shows that come out now are dumb, reruns, or old ideas. There really isn't anything fresh on the air at this time. I think people often watch streaming services because they can watch basically whatever they want to watch, when they want to watch it. You can not do this on traditional TV services unless you buy the "On Demand" package, or get a premium service from your media company.

Oh yes as Internet speeds up and it's no longer an issue sending such high bit rate services to people quickly, streaming will become more and more popular and in demand. Some places already stream 4K content and that has an exceptionally high bit rate. Mind you, you need to be on a fiber optic connection to get it. Then there's Li-Fi which will soon replace Wi-Fi altogether. Basically, as technology increases and more and more people have it, there will be more and more a demand for streaming services and content to people. I think it will be a while yet, probably another decade or so until it does completely replace all standard services like cable and satellite TV. There is just still too much money to be made by the TV and channel operators to sell those services to people. But eventually, I do believe that streaming will completely replace standard fixed line services altogether. We'll just have to live for a little while longer yet before we see that happening but it will definitely happen. It's just a matter of time. Either that or some new technology will replace that as well. As is usually the case.

Yes I think so for sure! We have DSTV at our home which is satellite TV and it is so expensive! We pay about R700 a month for it which is close on $50 a month.

We get reruns of old things and there is honestly not so much to see but we keep it on mostly because they have Box Office so we can rent a new movie when it comes out. Plus it has all the kids channels so when I need to get work done it is brilliant!

But for me and my hubby it doesn't give us much.

Then we also have Showmax which is a streaming service. That only costs us R99 a month, which is $7. The problem with this is that there are not enough shows for me and hubby and kids. Plus we don't have a smart TV so we have to connect my laptop to the TV which means I can't work if anyone wants to watch something which is a huge thumbs down LOL.

But yes we will get a smart tv next time so we can stream directly.

Being in South Africa we don't have a huge amount of streaming options. Like Netflix is not available to us.

I actually don't think that it will. Just because older folks don't exactly use the internet like younger people. I'm sure in no shorter than 50-60 years it will but until then I don't see it happening.

You have a point here in the sense that it is not going to totally take over the TV section, but the reality is that many people are now subscribing to the idea of Livestream which I feel is going to expand in no distant time as well.

I'm Keen to see how everything is going to turn out in few years to come.

My take on this issue is a yes and no. If the tv networks and cable channels will stagnate with their programming, I guess the streaming services will take over the majority of viewers especially when the cable subscriptions are getting expensive every year. But I see that tv networks are innovating all the time. The cable provider has now a pay-per-view of their own for old movies which is getting to be a hit here. So maybe the fight between the cable and streaming will continue to be heated and will remain a toss up.

One thing that I certainly know is that many people are now making use of their mobile devices to watch lots of things via streaming and that is a welcome development to the world of technology since you can now be able to sit at the comfort of your office or while traveling to enjoy any of the channels that you like. I am watching to see how everything will pan out at the end of the day.

I suspect there will be both models operating for some time to come. But at Cable is, will change. It will stop being the case that you must buy 100 channels and become more of a "pick the channels you want" system which will make the pricing of cable much lower and balance out the pros and cons. Once that happens more people will use services through cable and through streaming depending on the content offered.

And I don't say this as a big cable fan, I haven't subscribed to cable for about 3-4 years now. But I think cable is superior for delivering news and big events like the Olympics or Eurovision.
