    LOL and smiley faces - are you a culprit?

    Do you LOL all the time and add smiley faces? LOL and smiley faces - are you a culprit?

    I know that I am a big time culprit but I think it suits me. I am quite a happy and upbeat person and I just love to add a LOL or smiley face when I am chatting to people online.

    One thing I love about using LOL or a smiley face is that things can easily be misinterpreted, but in this way you can keep things light hearted and happy.

    Are you a LOL'er and a LOL and smiley faces - are you a culprit? person?

    I'm definitely both a LOL'er and a smiley-person, but I don't use it as often as I could when it comes to business. Even though I might like to use these symbols I try not to, as it might in fact look unprofessional or inappropriate, depending to the person on the other end. - However, I use this all the time when I'm talking to my friends or people I know.

    Yes I feel the same way Andre. When I chatting in a community discussion like this, or on social media, or perhaps Skype then I am a big time LOL'er and smiley facer. But when I am writing work emails or posts for my websites I don't LOL or smiley face at all really.

    I do think that there is a time and a place for it. I have seen lots of people using LOL and smileys when writing business emails and on their website posts too but for me that is taking it a little too far even though I am such a LOL fan.

    Yes I like to use both lol as well as smiley faces especially with people whom I know well, such as relatives and friends, and clients that I have been dealing with for some time and have sort of developed a good relationship with. I agree that the inclusion of a smiley can help to make sure that the recipient understands that what you said was lighthearted and cheerful, and it helps to avoid misinterpretations, I agree with that.

    Yes I agree, smileys and LOL's are for people that you know - friends, family and yes long time clients that you have a good working relationship with.

    Oh yes even if I don't mean to! I sometimes put in at least a little smile at the end. It really depends on who I'm talking to and what about and the tone I'm putting across. Like if I'm being serious then I wont use them but if I'm just being nice and saying thank you or something I'll put a little smiley face at the end of it to let them know I'm smiling about that or to let them see it's something worth smiling about!

    I don't think they are what professionals should use all the time. Like when you get an email from some big company talking about some business thing. It wouldn't be good if that contained a lot of smiley faces as you wouldn't be able to take them very seriously. But some companies can get away with using smiley faces and kisses in their emails.

    Frank Body is a coffee body scrub that appeals to the younger generation massively on Instagram. I've got a couple emails from them and they usually call me "babe" and sign off with a couple xx's. I don't mind that and see anything wrong with that. But if was getting an email from my lawyer or something I wouldn't be too impressed if they called me babe and signed off with a couple kisses at the end lol xx

    I usually do it when I'm having a conversation or when I'm writing a piece of content that wants to will be conversation oriented. I think some people go over the top by using smiley faces and "lol" but whatever floats your boat.

    When doing writing or reading very serious content, professional stuff, I really don't want to see "lols" and smiley faces, puts me off and makes me think its all a joke and not that really important in the first place.

    Cristian, it is all about online etiquette isn't it? There are times when certain things are just not appropriate. Some people just don't understand it though and I doubt they ever will.

    I definitely like to use those smiley faces while I am chatting with others. However, I normally write journal articles and I can't include those emoticons in my articles. Those are articles related to the economy most of the times. If I am actually writing about something fun I might include some emoticons but not too many of them.

    I use LOL and smileys when I am having casual talks with friends in a private chat, especially private. Those are good ways of expressing myself when I tell stories or good news. But when it comes to freelancing or business matters, I don't use them. I am aware that freelancing and business are not the right places for LOL's and smileys. I practice professionalism and good etiquette when it comes to those things so I do formal writing for them. I have nothing against LOL and smileys as long as they are just used for lighter or casual conversations.

    LOLs and smileys do lighten up a discussion or chat and have their own place in the online world. I wouldn't dare use them, though, for professional work unless the client has specifically requested to include them. I think it would be alright to use them in most forums and they can help emphasize what the member is trying to impart. Some forums, however, have specific rules that disallow the use of more than three successive smileys and one should be aware if such limitations exist. Smileys may blend in well with content in some types of blogs but could be counterproductive in others.

    I also believe smileys can keep the conversation flowing without anyone misinterpreting anything.
    I also like using them frequently because they are cute and they make chatting to be fun. When people do not use it, they appear to be more serious and I always tend to interpret the texts negatively.

    I do this a lot Lol. it helps make light of an heated conversation. Smiley helps to really express one's emotion,sometimes we don't just want to spell the.out. we just use any of them to drive home our point which I believe it better.

    I have to admit that in some forums that I inhabit, I sometimes use the term LOL which means it is funny to me. That’s the big difference in printed words and said words because in the printed word there is no intonation. Even a grin couldn’t be expressed in the written word so maybe LOL is okay to denote such gesture or feelings. But I have never used smileys and I don’t intend to because I don’t think those smiley’s are meant for the younger generation.
