    Are surround speakers better than a sound bar?

    I am thinking of improving the audio quality of my television and I was browsing online to try to decide what I should buy. I do not intend to spend much, and I am a bit confused whether it is better to invest in surround speakers, or a sound bar. Has any of you bought any of these products, or maybe can recommend what is best? I do not understand much to be honest, and I do not want to end up spending a couple of hundred dollars on something that could have been better for a slightly higher price. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Im not going to lie i was impressed when i heard the sound bar style speaker for the first time. It is really loud and clear but is doesn't provide that bass that shakes the entire room when an explosion happens in the movie. I have to many kids to have any of these nice things they will just destroy them. If you have a small living room the sound bar is fine. Also if you do not have a house a surround sound system may bother the neighbors. It really also depends on your living situation as well. I hope my answer helped you thanks for sharing!

    Yes oh yes Jkeyz2... that is what I love about surround sound too Are surround speakers better than a sound bar?

    And yes the kids... we have this kickass surround system that my dad gave me but out set up in this house is not good for it with the kids!

    But yeah one day.... we'll set it up LOL

    Well the room is quite big and the ceiling is high. I used to have a low quality surround system several years ago, and I remember I had a horrible time trying to install them properly with all the wires showing here and there. So I would need to invest in wireless speakers, which are unfortunately quite expensive.

    100%! Surround sound speakers do just that, surround the whole room with sound. Where as a soundbar only omits sound from once place. But it really depends what you want it for. Is this for a new TV that you want to increase the sound quality for? And did you just want to increase the sound quality of that TV or did you want to create the full cinema experience? Surround sound speakers usually come as a 5.1. A typical 5.1 system comprises of two front speakers, a center speaker, two rear speakers and a sub woofer which you place in optimum places around your room. Usually one in each corner of your room. But there are 5.1 soundbars as well you can get now too.

    I purchased one a little while back when I got a new 4K TV. It wasn't a smart 4K TV though and the sound was really bad! It sounded really tinny and echoey so I ended up sending it back. I still have my Sony Bravia and it has great sound, although not 4K ready. But the soundbar I got for it was an half decent one and I think I paid around £75 for it. Which would be about $95 dollars. But quite simply, the best ones are usually going to be the best makes like Sony, Samsung even Phillips. But if you just want to increase the quality of the sound coming from your TV. You can pick up a fairly decent soundbar for around $100 today. Some go for as much as up to $1000+ but that's just serious overkill if all you want to do is just increase the sound quality of your new TV. Are surround speakers better than a sound bar?

    Yes I think surround speakers can offer more in terms of sound. The main problem is that they tend to be more expensive, especially since I would definitely opt for wireless if I decide to buy them. That is why I was considering a sound bar, as they seem to be more affordable. However, I do not know what to consider in terms of sound quality specifications. You know, for a mouse you check the dpi. But in this case what do you check, in numeric terms?

    Are you sure you really need wireless speakers? I know they are a nice commodity as it literally means having no wires lying around or running up and down your walls. But if you lay them right you can trunk them and it will save you a considerable amount as good wireless speakers are a bit more expensive than wired as you've noticed. In numeric terms, with speakers it's all about clarity, depth and tone. It's about the Sensitivity rating, (the decibels). The Impedance rating (a measure of its resistance). The Frequency Response (measured in Hertz). The power handling (measured in Watts). The SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). It's about the dB's and ohm's. Good modern speakers today should be have at least an 6-8 ohm rating. Also if you only want it for home entertainment purposes like watching movies and don't want to blare out music really really loud then you'll want a set that has a sensitivity rating of about 80dB to 88dB per watt. Otherwise if you want good clarity when it's turned up loud then a set that has a sensitivity rating of between 89dB to 100dB per watt or more. But for a home entertainment system then you'll be find with the lower end ones. I sort of hope that helps? Are surround speakers better than a sound bar?

    I just love surround sound, so I would vote for that! We have a surround sound system but I haven't set it up in this house because we have tiled floors throughout and high ceilings, it is a loud and echoey house. I don't want to boom sound through a surround system in here Are surround speakers better than a sound bar?

    I am waiting till we buy our own home and then I will put it up.

    The sound bar was awesome actually. I was seriously impressed when I heard it the first time in a store. It almost felt like surround sound to be totally honest. I thought I could hear the sound from both sides and in front of me, and almost behind me too. It was a crazy experience. However, surround sound is better in every aspect. If you're looking for a great sound experience that is. That being said, you'll need to set the speakers properly. You want to be in the middle of the whole thing.

    Oh my! and I thought that I was the most stupid person on earth when it comes to such electronic stuff! Thanks for sharing this picture as it was able to show very well indeed what surround speakers should be installed like, especially since a common tendency is to place the two rear speakers next to the sofa, that is, on either side of it, as in most cases the sofa itself is against the wall.

    When it comes to the sofa and that you have it against the wall.. Like I bet most people does. Take a look at this: (It's like you already stated above).

    Even though it's not identical to the first image I showed you, it's the next best thing I guess. And that's how most people would solve this "issue". At least I solved it like that and it worked out well.

    After all, everyone can't place their sofa in the middle of a room, so we'll need to make some "sacrifices". Are surround speakers better than a sound bar?

    Surround sound speakers all the way! You will definitely notice the difference once you have them, watching a movie will become a cool experience. I currently have two speakers with one main big bass box, this is not surround technology but it still makes the job done and the sound is very powerful and clear. I use it for my laptop/desktop, I find it better than using surround speakers for which you need a lot of room and can become pretty strange when sitting at your desk.

    Yeah, that is the best for me as well as it brings some kind of calmness and cool moments around with the way that the bass is around the whole place. Surround speakers are here to stay and that is the reason may people are buying them as well.

    We have a family friend who is fond of acoustics that he claims to have the very first surround speakers in our country. When I sampled the sound in his music room, I was amazed because the sound of the instruments seems to be coming from everywhere as if the orchestra was playing right inside the room. It’s just sad that I cannot compare the surround speakers with the sound bar because this is the first time I’ve heard of the latter.

    Surround speakers look a better get for me. This is going to make people around this place get to hear what is actually happening on the TV because the speaker is always close to them. Making decisions putting them into consideration is all that actually matters at the end of the day.
