Duplicate content is bad for SEO and bad in general. Which would be why there's hundreds of article spinners out there for instance. And even though I don't use article spinners myself, as I find it both useless and boring, I can still see why some people are using spinners. That being said, what is duplicate content then?
Most of us already knows that duplicate content are an exact copy of content shared elsewhere, or that you've published the exact same article twice on your website etc.
But is that really all to it?
How about using duplicate titles or sentences? - Would that have a negative impact on my site?

So this wouldn't be duplicate content.. But would it be beneficial to rank for such things too?
I mean, people would probably try to rank "twitter followers" in case they had a marketplace, but would they benefit by ranking both "cheap twitter followers" or "good twitter followers"?

Thank you Lynne! - I wasn't aware of LSI keywords. I'll have to look into that a bit further on. Latent Semantic Keywords.. Geez, all these names and abbreviations to remember! - As a true novice, this is literally overwhelming at times. - Perhaps most of the times to be honest.
Anyhow, I'll try to remember that in the nearest future and I hope I'll have use for it too some day :D

It's not duplicate content as much as it is cannibalized content. Duplicate content is content that is exactly the same. But these are different versions of the same keyword phrase. When I see your quoted keyword question phrases, I see different meanings for each. Example "why" is different to "how". Why would state reasons why it's bad for you. And the how would state reasons how it's bad for you. Although why and how can both be interoperably used if that's the right word.
So even though they are all very similar, the words have moved around in each and use different nouns and verbs or are swapped around in place of each other. This then isn't duplicate content. And it can be good to have several posts on your site that are all written in different but similar ways. For as Lynne has mentioned, there are often many different ways that someone strings a sentence together. They all use round and about the same words, but they are placed differently within the sentence.
But it's better just to write a new fresh article that contains your keywords but is a completely different bit of content. Great question! I think this is something many people, bloggers and webmasters ask them selves at some point along the line! I know it's something I used to wonder about back in the day when thinking about how I could repurpose my current content. And in some cases, I've literally rewritten some of my old blog posts in about the same way, only changing the words around and have seen good results from doing that too. In fact, I'd say any blogger that is struggling for new content on their site, take a look at their current content and you may be able to use that as ideas for new content.
