QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. A barcode is a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item to which it is attached.

Yes! I use them! I use them in things like Infographics, and I use one of them as my avatar on my YouTube channel too. For instance, if you play any one of my videos and hover over it with your mouse, an image shows in the bottom left of the video and that image is a link to my Channel and also happens to be a QR code.
But while you can use them online, they are more suited for using offline use though, such as in flyers, leaflets and posters and the like. And I get what you mean about looking ugly! But they don't have to look ugly! There are some QR code generators out there that can make a cool looking QR code for you from say, an image of something.
Here is one I made that is using my [b]SEOClerks affiliate link[/b].

And it doesn't look that ugly does it?
And you can use these anywhere and everywhere! Think on mugs and cups, on t-shirts and other clothing items. On bags, on anything! And since QR code scanners are free apps people can install and all they have to do is take a picture of it, it makes them kind of cool and interesting to use for people. To see what's on the other side and where they'll be taken to.
I happen to think they're really cool and can be useful if used right. Such as in offline marketing campaigns. And a lot of places use them along with their website link and a lot of people use QR code scanner apps as well so all they have to do is scan it to be taken to the site instead of having to manually punch in the URL or a really long URL.
But I see that as something that's better to have and not need than it is to need and not have as some people rely on them! :)

I see your point Mike, and I know why QR codes could be a superb thing, but I seriously don't like them at all. Your code with the logo looks awesome though. It's the coolest one I've seen so far but I still wouldn't want to check it out. - I mean, I can't seriously think of even one thing that would make me to scan a QR code. - Perhaps it's just me but I just don't like them, at all. :D

Ah there will come a time when you will come across one and end up downloading and installing a QR code reader to view it. You mark my words. One day you will on something. One day. :D
