    Becoming a professional freelance photographer ?

    For a while now I'm contemplation on buying a medium DSLR camera and starting to learn about photography and how to turn this into another freelance skill to earn more money online.
    Becoming a professional freelance photographer ?Every since Mike made written this tutorial: 10+ Way Cool Free Stock Photo Image Sites for Personal or Commercial Uses - I've been wondering how can I turn the table around and actually earn and sell my photos, not just give them away for free.

    Is the online market big enough for people to want to buy stock photo images? I know there are a lot of websites around where you can sell your work, but can you actually achieve a profit without a top spec camera?

    I first want to buy the camera, probably a DSLR Nikon D3300 and then practice a lot, read tutorials and evolve my skills.

    Once I have a pretty good idea how to make photos and edit them, I'm planning to buy equipment for a small studio, I want to target online stores in my area that need professional photos for their products.

    What do you think is the better alternative, make the pictures and sell them online or start a website to target local clients?

    Man I'm with you! I've been considering doing something similar myself for a while now but for aerial photography using a drone with a 4K GoPro or something to take aerial photography and videography with. Both for at events like weddings, parties and celebratory events etc. And for surveillance purposes and for personal, hobby, interest reasons also. I'm just saving up for a good drone and camera! I'm thinking DJI Phantom like the Phantom 3 just for now. The Phantom 4 is quite pricey and that's a lot to loose if you crash it or it flies off into space due to some user error or something lol. Or probably not even DJI but some other DJI Phantom alternative instead.

    Because there is a big demand for this type of photography and videography right now. You can sell this kind of thing easily to people who are holding weddings and would like some aerial photography or video of the day as it unfolded. You couldn't get that 10+ years ago unless you could afford to hire some photographer and a small helicopter but they are expensive and noisy and the down wash plays havoc on the bride hair!! Lol

    But there is a demand for it and not just that but for companies that need to do surveillance of buildings. This includes actual surveillance companies, insurance companies or even landlords that need to do some inspection of a whole building drones are perfect for this.

    One of the reasons I'd like to get into it myself is simply to take amazing landscape photos of different places. You can sell these to art and picture shops who will buy them from you, blew them up and then sell them as pictures, wallpapers, posters etc. Becoming a professional freelance photographer ?

    And of course! You can sell those sorts of photos online! There are many stock sites that buy them from you. And not just stock sites but other places you can sell your high quality photos and pictures to as well. You don't even need a mad professional camera like a DSLR camera. Most modern smartphones can take the same high res photos today. Although a DSLR camera is a much more dedicated camera and much more suited for taking a lot of high res photos with, there are people making money selling pictures and photos taken on their phone.

    But yeah, in answer to your question, both! Take the pictures and sell them online and start a website to attract local clients with as well. They both go hand in hand with them and you may as well do one if you're doing the other.

    Drone filming is definitely on another level! I would love to get to that point, but for starters all I want is to learn the basics and maybe in time turn a profit around, slowly but surely.

    OMG Mike, how just like you to take a simple photography discussion and turn it into aerial drone photography LOL.

    I am with Mike on this one, I would do your own website and also find places to sell them online too. Why limit yourself to one of the other?

    I have thought of this before and if you live in an area that is well populated you could very easily make a living shooting videos and pictures. I would start by putting an ad on craigslist or something similar if you do not have that. Buy business cards vista print has them very cheap. I would go out and start looking for your target audience. Maybe you have a place with alot of tourist close to you? Hand out business cards to them and let them know you do professional pictures and video for anytime they are on vacation. I would ask local flower shops to hand out your card as well. People who go to flower shops are sometimes getting married or have some sort of special occasion coming up and that could be your foot in the door. I would do all of the free promotion you can before you start spending money. Get the flow of cash going and the phone ringing before you try and conquer the world.     I think it could be a very good opportunity, and if you have a knack for photography, you will be able to earn money as well as enjoy doing it at the same time. I would say go for it because there is a market indeed. Good luck!

    My husband has that plan of turning professional in his photography hobby. In gatherings and occasion, he claims to be the unofficial photographer. However, he admits it's not an easy job to take pictures especially in events that require alertness and keen observation. And with selling stock photos, I don't think it is a good business.

    This is a good area one can harness to make good money from, it a nice idea of thinking of getting a better tool which is a good camera before diving into it.most amateur photographers don't get to make a dime probably because the picture quality is bad or they can't take a great shot.It no brainy that one needs to equip his or herself with the needed skills to excel.So yea, get the camera, read and praticalise before thinking of commercializing to make a huge success of it.
