Cyber Security - Protect Your Computer From Keyloggers

Basically a keylogger is a piece a software that will record anything you type on your computer and then store all your information to the attacker server. Now the question is how to stay safe from keyloggers?....

The most important thing is to not click/run everything that it looks suspicious, or , if you don't have enough information about that file. Do not ever download softwares from different sources, try to use always official and safe sources, for example if you're going to download "Google Chrome" download it from its url google.com/chrome not from a random domain xxxx.com/chrome, because you'll never know what's behind that file, just because antivirus does not recognize it as virus it doesn't mean that it's safe.

Cyber Security - Protect Your Computer From Keyloggers

Few Easy Steps to Stay Safe

1.Keep antivirus always updated - Never turn off updates as that affect directly in the malware identification, if the database it's not updated with latest malware reports it will not recognize new viruses.

2.Keep firewall always on - Do not ever turn off the firewall of your computer.

3.Use Additional Firewalls - I recommend Comodo firewall, it comes with many built-in features which are very useful, also they offer two version of comodo free and paid, depends on your needs but the free version works perfect too.

4.Use Keyscrambler - Now, Keyscrambler it's not an antivirus or something that will prevent you computer from being infected, the function of keyscrambler is to encrypt everything you type on your computer in the worst cases when you're already infected with an keylogger, so it means that everthing that keylogger will record will be encrypted.

5.Use TCP/IP Monitoring Tool - It will allow you to see all IP-s that are connected and transmiting data from your computer, to get better results make sure that all other software processes are closed. Doing that will help you to recognize which process is still sending data.

6.Check regularly software startups - If you see a random name that you don't recognize in the most cases it's a malware, but you should google it first, and then you'll see if that is a malware or simply software process.

7.Back up your system - You should always create back-ups of your system, because not all keyloggers can be easily removed. A clean install of your operating system is the most effective way when it comes to viruses.

Hope this helps!

Good information, procoder.

I didn't know existence of Keyscrambler's. But I think that is a great option to prevent that keyloggers record any information.

Other alternative is to use a virtual keyboard.

procoder
Thanks! Yeah virtual keyboard it's another way against keyloggers, but personally I do not recommend using it as everything depends on the keylogger how it captures the keys.

Yes yes, you're right, depends on the keylogger how it captures the keys, but I think that the most common keyloggers can't bypass a virtual keyboard.

I think that with the Kaspersky virtual keyboard or Neo’s SafeKeys you'll be protected against the majority of keyloggers.

I've never used them, but I don't think that most of keyloggers record only keystrokes, everything depends how sophisticated the keylogger is. It's called keylogger but it's a simple malware that can record anything on your computer, keystrokes, mouse clicks ,screenshots, even software processes can be intercepted and modified by them. Furthermore nothing is 100% effective, I recommend only a clean install of your operating system in such cases.

Yes, when we talk about Informatic Security, nothing is 100% effective. In the majority of cases, Informatic Security, becomes in Informatic (In)Security.

Thanks for sharing these tips with us. Unfortunately I tend to forget about the importance of security. I am truly scared of such stuff and yet I do not understand that much. I sort of think that the antivirus software on my laptop is enough but I guess there is more to it than that.

Never heard about Keyscrambler before, I will definitely check it out and install something like this. I think the best method to stay out of trouble is to be careful on what pages you access and what exactly are you downloading.

Last time I got infected with a virus was like 7 years ago, I was searching for a crack or key to crack this software I wanted to use and I downloaded basically a virus. So lesson learned, better to use a free version of the software or just buy it. Since then and didn't had any problems and I actually lived without an antivirus for quite some time without getting infected (or at least this is what I think).

Thanks for all the cyber security tips Pro! They all sounds like really good sense and advice. Especially in today's cyber world where you can never be too careful! I was not aware also of that Keyscrambler app, it sounds quite useful actually and makes me wonder, why don't we just use that all the time? In fact, why aren't all Windows computers or otherwise using that by default? Wouldn't it mean a much safer working and playing environment for us? Wouldn't it mean that if all and everything we typed was scrambled and encrypted then if our computers did get infected with some virus that records key strokes etc wouldn't even be able to see what was typed etc anyway right? There must be a reason why that isn't so by default. I presume it uses a lot of extra processing power or something to actually encrypt/scramble it right?

Thank you for all these tips Procoder. I have always just assumed that an antivirus is good enough, but now that I see the other discussion which was talking about Webcam Hacking and now this discussion about Keyloggers.

I think perhaps I have overlooked the severity of cyber security. Almost everything is done online these days and just like I work from home on my laptop I suppose the thieves are also doing that too right? Stealing online from the comfort of their own homes must be much easier and possibly less risky than physically breaking into a person's home.

Completely agree with #7, it's so helpful to have proper backups.

A couple other things I would add are:
- Under Windows, if you have file extentions hidden, don't double-click to open files unless you've checked it is the type of file it seems to be. People can trick you into executing things using filenames like "thatvideoyouwanted.avi.exe".
- When downloading files the from net, if possible, hash it, and compare the checksum. If possible get the checksum from 2 or more different sites.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

procoder
Thanks for your reply! Yes, comparing two checksums is another way to find if the original file has been tampered or modified. I didn't mentioned that part because not all people are familiar or even have heard about checksums, as long as they're not going to download softwares from unknown sources they don't need to do that, but yeah it's something that people should know about, and maybe I'll cover it in another topic.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Oh yeah that's a good tip! And that's another thing! The hidden file extensions. Considering many cyber criminals use this weakness to fool people into clicking on things for years, I've always wondered why they don't just make Windows so that show file extensions is always enabled by DEFAULT. Considering most people who learn about this and don't want to inadvertently click on a malicious file thinking it's just a WaterfallWallpaper.jpeg when really it's a WaterfallWallpaper.jpeg.exe and only change to this option anyway! I mean come on! What real purpose does it serve the user to disable and hide file extensions anyway?

And yeah backups! That's another good subject to cover too. Backups are so more important than we realize because you only realize just how much you should have backed up when you have a HDD failure or some data corruption/loss or something. Like they say you only realize you miss something when it's gone! Lol Cyber Security - Protect Your Computer From Keyloggers

This is a very important topic for people like me. I use the internet all day long and im constantly subjected to fake websites that claim that my computer is infected. The worst kind of way that people get infected is by downloading software from third parties instead of going direct. You did a really good job at explaining in detail how to stay safe from this kind of attack. If you get infected with key logger software everything you do and everything you own is at jeopardy. Backing up your system helps but key loggers do not want to delete your information they want to steal you passwords and credit card information so they can go shopping. Another IP monitoring tool i use is called Advanced Ip Scanner, its a windows application and it works great. I would just like to add that homes with wireless are more likely to get hacked due to many back doors in wireless routers. Thanks for helping us stay safe on the internet.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

procoder
Thanks for your reply Jkeyz! Creating backups of your system and files it's a must if you want to avoid system crashes or viruses.

Advanced Ip Scanner it's a great tool, but it does not help you to analyze processes which are transmitting data, it's simply a tool only for checking and scanning IP ranges on your network.

And yes, wifi routers are vulnerable to attacks specially when their firmware it's not updated, I'll cover that in another cd.

Great tips, just one more tip, that you probably forgot to mention:
  • Use additional malware scanning software and scan frequently, each 2 weeks or after a month - such as MalwareBytes, etc. so that in case you got infected by a Malware File/Trojan that is FUD and bypassed the Antivirus, this would find it and clean it. And people should frequently check what's on their Startup, by Going to Run and typing "msconfig" and if there is something suspicious to disable it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

procoder
Thanks for your reply Steven! Well FUD file is made to bypass antiviruses, so detection depends on the encryption of the FUD file, removing/cleaning a fud file that already has compromissed your system it's not something that is going to help you. In such cases reinstalling OS is the only way.

And yes, msconfig for older versions than windows 10, as windows 10 startups are located in Task manager (Ctrl+alt+del) now.

Being careful to avoid viruses and intruders to your computer is a good habit. One basic rule is not to be nosy on the emails that you receive particularly if the sender is unknown to you. Clicking on the links is not a good habit so try to be discerning. Much more, some emails contain the link that is embedded in an image so when you click the image, you actually click the link. Those links can be hazardous that’s why for good measure, click only the link or image of an email if you are pretty sure of what it is all about.
