I know there are so many different thoughts about choosing a niche.
Some people do loads of research into it and try to come up with a niche that can make lots of money.
And some people think about what they are really passionate about and go for it.
What are your thoughts about choosing a website niche and how have you gone about it?
So far I have chosen all my website niches based on passions…. And now my fourth website is going to be filling a need in our area, I think there is an opening in the market for this so I am going to run with it next year.

I was wondering about that actually. At one stage I was thinking about starting a new website and just blogging about whatever it is that comes into my mind.... but I never got around to it :)

That's a good question. How do you choose a niche? What is a good niche to go with and work in and which isn't? I think the best thing is like how you have done, to choose and go with a niche that you are passionate about. Something you have some kind of vested interest in. That way, you will care more about it and be more likely to succeed within it. Where as choosing something you don't really care about or have much interest in will mean you're more likely to grow bored of that before you really start seeing some results from it.
But that's not to say you still can't find success in a niche you know nothing about at all or really care much about. I was watching Dragons Den on TV once and this couple came on talking about this new product. From that I could see this was a new product and was going to blow up. I quickly jumped online, done a bit of research and came up with an awesome killer domain name. I found a hole in the market and after a few months of blogging about it started to see some results from that. It was in a niche I knew absolutely nothing about at all. But I researched it, read a whole bunch of articles on it and quickly learned that niche. Several months later down the line I had busy site, was getting a lot of orders and was doing quite well from it.
However, I kind of "imitated" another main brand and they sent me a cease and desist notice. Even though I wasn't pretending to be them and was actually selling their product in my store. I think their notice was a fake one though and I wrote back to their lawyers who sent it to me to tell them how wrong it was and that in a court of law I would win since I wasn't using their name or branding or anything and it was just a generic online store selling their product along with other companies products as well. They didn't respond to any of my subsequent emails and in the end I just decided to flip the site which I did.
But the moral of the story is to try and find a niche that is new but is going to be big and then get in early on that. Since Google ranks sites and keyword by order that they were found in. It's often easy to get a site ranking high for that without needing to do much SEO on it.
What you need to do is learn how to find hot new niches as they are being invented/created and jump on that before too many people do and be one of the first websites to start blogging about it / selling it and if you get that right you're onto a sure fire winner! :)

I would advice all new bloggers to take a niche that they have some clue and they are comfortable with. I have had blogs in general, pets, renewable energy and some other niches. General niche is the easiest because you can basically post whatever you feel without having to keep a particular way. Just post and blabber around all day long and no one will say anything.
