    Social signals are a big thing now with search engine optimization. Posting, getting shares, sharing, etc. will definitely help your search engine rankings, but it has to be done in a non spammy way. You can't just load up some software and let it run all day and night to get your followers or tweets, you'll need to do a lot of this manually to be safe.     Another thing you have to focus on is being active within your social community and pages. You'll need to post frequently which means around 2 or 3 times a week. Don't post at 1am in the morning because there won't be as many people seeing your post in their news feed compared to if you posted at Noon. As such, going viral or being popular on those sites such as getting your posts/pages/articles/products/services etc, shared to them regularly can mean each of those sites goes on to send you tons and tons of real traffic visitors from those sites from the things from your site that are shared on them. This traffic can help increase some of your domains statistics and things and all traffic can help to increase your brand awareness online provided it's real human people traffic which those sites have a lot of in droves.

    But more than this, those are high authority, Google loved sites as well. That's why they rank so high! Google loves any site where there are real people visiting and using it every day. And as such, links that come from these sites can be helpful for your site as well as they are all high authority sites and having links from these sites can help to increase authority and trust to your own site as well.

    So they have a two fold benefit. Traffic and links. Traffic has its own bunch of benefits for your site. The first is that the more traffic you have on your site. The more people there are looking at it. The more clicks, sales and revenue your site makes. The other benefits of that traffic is the brand awareness it brings you about your site/business and how it can help to increase your sites metrics like Alexa rating etc. And of course, the links from those sites. Although mostly no follow. They will still have a good effect on your site.

    And finally, links from these sites count as social signals. And the way social signals work is a real no brainer! Basically, the more of them you have, the more popular your site is considered to be because they are all from people sharing it on social networking sites somehow. Whether they are simply posting it to their profile or a page or a group or something. And how many times that share is being liked/reshared/commented on etc. All these are social signals and considered essentially a vote for your site.

    Oh and of course, if you have pages on those sites such as an official Facebook Fanpage or group or something. You can build those up and get links from them and send traffic to your site, products, offers etc as well which then goes on to get reshared again and so on.     Well, in essence, social networks don't really help SEO directly, as a dofollow backlinks does. But social networks can and will drive a lot of traffic to your website, Google and other search engines will pick up on those signals, especially if you are shared in a natural way by people on social networks, so spamming Facebook yourself with your website's' link won't help, your popularity must look natural.

    Finally, you'll get a score in terms of social media signals, these signal score will in turn influence your rankings.

    Based on the comments above, social signals help the site’s ranking indirectly. And I think the main benefit that you get from those social signals is the direct traffic from the post about your site. For example you post about your new content. When your friends and followers in social media would click on the link of that web page then that is clearly traffic to your site.
