What do you prefer more Icons, labels, or both?

I was reading an article about software/apps these days, as how icons and text labels has a lot of difference between them when it comes to usability of app.

Well they are the same thing by the function , but according to some researches people like more icons with text labels on it as icons are hard to memorize.

Personally I like more icons, actually I don’t think that I’ve had any problem with memorizing icons function so far, but also I would say that depends on the type of app, some of them may need more text to describe the function of each icon.

It really depends on what I'm using and how long I've been using it.

If I'm on my email then I'm use to all the icons and don't need any type of label because I've done all the trial and error to figure out what everything is lol. A pretty sweet option is to have labels when you hover over, or alt tags, so that if someone doesn't know what they icon is they can just hover and see if it's what they need.

Now if I'm new to some kind of software I prefer to have labels and icons since I usually skip most tutorials on how to use the software. I know I should watch everything I can before using it, and sometimes I do if it involves my website, but I usually know how the software is going to operate. If there's an option to remove the labels after I get use to the software then I would opt out of labels after I feel comfortable.

Just having labels is never pleasing to the eye I feel. I've actually never seen any type of serious software or system only use labels for their buttons. It's like taking a long time to code something amazing and plastering crap on it with labels lol. Just put some icons on there with labels and give the option to remove the labels if the user wants

Only Labels all the way, I'm a very simple guy and I want simple things that are straight to the point. Only icons may be confusing for some people, even for me on some websites I can't figure out for the life of me what certain icons stand for! So if you have a new product or new website, don't put ONLY icons, especially if some of them may take a while to understand, don't forget not everyone is familiar with them right from the start.

Having both icons and labels may satisfy anybody, in my opinion, so yeah, I guess even though I would personally prefer just labels, icons + labels is the best way to go.

I'm with Razz on this one. It really depends on what I'm using and how well I've got used to using it so that I know what the icons represent. In the cases of software or online services that I haven't used before, then I'd prefer icons with labels. Or just labels. But then as I get used to using it and know what the icons represent. I'd prefer just icons only with no labels. That said I'd be happy with just labels only as with labels there is no need for icons or both. I think overall though, people prefer icons with labels but they would also like the option of being able to have them show icons only when they become well versed in using it and know what each of those icons represent.

I like icons and labels together or if I have to choose one only then I would most likely go for labels.

Yes I do agree that it does depend largely on what I am using and how familiar I am with using it of course. I am a reader and it is often quicker for me to read text than it is for me to figure out what an icon is.
