What exactly is search engine marketing

A lot of people always confuse search engine marketing (SEM) and search engine optimization (SEO). I'm here to shed some light on exactly what SEM is What exactly is search engine marketing

First off, SEM doesn't really help you rank higher in the search engines because 99% of the work that is put into it is to do exactly what it's called, marketing. You're phrasing your words in a way to increase your sales and you're not really focusing on backlinks to increase your rankings.

Now even though you're not trying to rank your website higher when doing an SEM campaign, the search engines are still involved. The search engines are still involved because of their PPC platforms. You will need to word your ads in a way so that they increase the click through rates and increase conversions. A nice little trick I like to do is add some numbers into the title and description in order to have them stand out among the other ads What exactly is search engine marketing

This type of marketing also spills over into your banner advertising. You can put up an ad that says "Buy The Shoes On My Website!" or you can have it say "50% off all shoes - Click Here" and it will convert much more than the first title. That is because you put a little marketing tweak on the ad. Both titles show that your website sells shoes, but one shows a discount and tells the person to click. Remember what I said about adding numbers to my PPC ads? Well that spills over to my banner ads as well in order to increase conversions. Another great thing about adding numbers to the ad is that people will know exactly what they're getting themselves into when they click through to your website. If your ad says your shoes are 50% off, they better be 50% off lol.

Remember a little earlier when I said that 99% of SEM doesn't involve rankings? Well the 1% that does is when you're posting on news websites or a popular blog in order to get some marketing for your business. You'll most likely post a backlink for your website somewhere in the post, and that's the only time that your rankings will get a boost because of your marketing What exactly is search engine marketing

Yeah, there's optimization and then there's marketing. You could do some things in marketing that could be considered optimization. And you can also do some things when optimizing that could also be considered marketing as well.

SEO = Search Engine Optimization
SEM = Search Engine Marketing

SEO and SEM go hand in hand with each other. When you are doing SEO and optimizing your site for the Search Engines, you will be doing things like building backlinks, blog commenting, forum posting, guest posting, press releasing etc etc. And that will also be marketing your site at the same time from the exposure those links get you from those places and platforms you build them on. Whether it's natural marketing or paid marketing that sends you direct referral traffic. All of it is considered exposure and all of it can help to increase your websites ranking in the SERPS.

SMO = Social Media Optimization
SMM = Social Media Marketing

SMO and SMM also go hand in hand with each other. As when you are SMO'ng your site or your page or channel on Social Media sites it's effectively SMM that you're doing as well as it's all marketing and bringing you extra exposure. And when you do SMM you are effectively doing optimization as well on those Social Media sites to get more exposure.

You could also put SMO and SMM and SEM in the same bag/category as SEO. Since when you are doing SEO, a part of that will be to do SMO/SMM as well. You'll want to make full use of Social Media sites in any good SEO campaign for the traffic, links and authority, trust and social awareness and signals that they would bring to your site by having them.
A nice little trick I like to do is add some numbers into the title and description in order to have them stand out among the other ads

Could you elaborate on this a bit more Razz? How do you mean by add numbers to the title and description?

Do you mean just random numbers or numbers that have a meaning and represent something like year or something?

Random numbers that pertain to your business, yourself, or anything else that is semi relevant.

An example for SeoClerks would be something like this: The #1 SEO Marketplace In The World Since 2010!

I got the #1 and 2010 in there. I've done testing and if you can get a price $$ in the title as well you'll see a higher click through. Like if it were "SEO services starting at just $1.00" you'll get a good amount of clicks.

Thanks Razzy, I have been hearing more and more about this over time. The first time I heard it is when my sister and her partner were telling me that I must start blogging when I opened my online store to help with getting traffic.

My sister's partner told me to add post that say something like "Top 10 tips for new moms" or "5 Best Natural Remedies for Nappy Rash".

I have done a good few of these and they do generate a good click through rate. I have to be honest though, all the way through starting working online I haven't exactly had a plan or done any testing or close monitoring or anything like that.

I just wing is as I go along!

In any decent digital agency Search Engine Marketing will be done by the marketing guys, the ones that deal with anything ads, like Adwords, Bing Ads or whatever. For example, I closely collaborate with the marketing department, they really on my on finding important keywords through my extended keywords research while they are optimizing the ads but including the perfect buzz words relevant to the niche they are promoting. So yes, I agree with Mike, they do go hand in hand with each other.

Marketing your contents through search engines is called search engine marketing or SEM in short. For search engine marketing you start your campaign on Adwords, yahoo Bing Ads. When you use these advertising network, your ads will appear on search engines. This will help you generate traffic as well as sales.

Honestly, I used to get confused on what search engine marketing is all about and I'm glad that you cleared my confusion with this article. Now, I know when I do this and not the other when SEO is concerned.

There are various ways to market your products and services online, you can do social media marketing, email marketing or search engine marketing. While you can use the former two for free, search engine marketing requires investment. Youn will have to pay to adwords or yahoo, bing ads to do search engine marketing. When you market through search engines your website will appear on the paid search list.

The moment that I am beginning to understand the full concept of SEO now comes SEM. All right, I know that the search engine can give the website traffic that is caused when someone does a search and sees the link of your site on the search list. But what exactly is search engine marketing and how does it not connect to the SEO? I am asking this question because I didn’t understand what SEM is all about. Pardon my ignorance.
