What do you think about "Selfie Payment" ?

What do you think about MasterCard's new payment option, "Selfie Payment" or on it's real marketed name Identity Check Mobile? Basically, you will be able to confirm and authorise any payments without using passwords or any digital calculator for special codes only with your face and your fingerprint. Amazing right?

What you will need in order to make this work?
First you have to download Mastercard app and take a selfie. This photo will be stored analyzed and then a digitalised version of your face will be stored on Mastercard's servers.

Then the photo will be used for future references whenever you will be making any purchases. As a security measure, in order to avoid fake identifications, the app will ask you to blink to prove that it's really you and not some static photo.
What do you think about "Selfie Payment" ?

To be completely honest, I don't use MasterCard because in our area VISA is more popular but I really really tend to get one because I will reduce the amount of useless password that I have to remember.

And let's admit that it looks quite fancy.

Oh okay yeah. That seems only befitting. A lot of payment merchants and authorities are increasing security by including such things as biometric retina eye scanning, fingerprint scanning and even DNA matching but that ones a bit "messier" of them all as it requires either a sample of your blood or saliva. But this method is a lot cleaner and simpler and as everyone's retina is as unique to them as their fingerprint is, it can't really be bypassed unless you happen to have an eyeball in your head that is identical to the original one. Retina eye scanning hasn't always been flawless though and could be bypassed if you happen to have a recent close up high quality photo of that person. But by making you blink that is one way around that as you can't really make a photo blink!

It's a good step by Mastercard to reduce fraud. I see other payment authorities, banks etc following suit and offering similar identification services in the future as well. PayPal for example. They already offer fingerprint sign in using their app. And my banking app does too. I'd imagine that in time, if it proves to be successful at preventing fraud, they would roll this out permanently as standard when logging in on a computer that has a camera on it or even on your smartphone and other devices that do too.

I have a Platinum card with Capital One and I'd be more than happy to take this extra step if it was an option or even mandatory if it means increased security and less chance of fraud being committed. Even though that would be pretty hard and nobody could login to it unless they new my passcode and happened to have my phone and new the unlock code or had my fingerprint to do so lol.

Perhaps SEOClerks could offer something like this in the future. Fingerprint and retina eye scanning. Just as a treble check measure in case someone just happened to get around all the other things like my master password and knew my address and happened to have my mobile number and could somehow intercept my mail. Unless they had my fingerprint and my eyeballs behind blinkers they got no chance! What do you think about "Selfie Payment" ?

Hey Mike, thanks for the huge reply What do you think about "Selfie Payment" ?

Actually, they don't scan your eye globe. As far as I understood they will scan your face and create something more like a "faceprint". Probably they will use some face recognition software to determine that is you who is trying to access the account.

This feature in Seoclerks, yeah it might work. Maybe Jordan can make a database with our faces, fingerprints and DNA and sell it to the highest bidder What do you think about "Selfie Payment" ?

I also only have Visa, so I won't have access to this for a while either. But really where one company goes with technology its big competitors and all the little guys are sure to follow suit in just a matter of time.

By the time you have your Mastercard delivered to your door and set up with selfie payments you'll find Visa has just come out with it anyway LOL.

I like this idea, it will stop people being able to hack into your accounts so easily. Like Mike says I bet all phones and computers will also soon have retina or fingerprint scanning. Even in the little gym, in our tiny little town in the middle of nowhere, in a third world country, you access the gym with your fingerprint!

Probably you are right, maybe it's not the best thing to shift from Visa to MasterCard for this reason only. It does work really well so except the "Selfie" thingje I don't have a particular reason to change.

I love my bank and all my cards through my bank are Visa... it is the most digitally advanced bank in my country so I will be staying with them for sure. They are the bank that connects with Paypal and I have everything through them. I won't change for something like that when I know it will just be a matter of time...

Ok I admit it looks very interesting feature, but personally I don't like it for some reason. Just because is using a "selfie" as a password, it does not mean that is offering more security than traditional passwords.

So we have to blink whenever we want to make a purchase or authenticate, and this feature it can't be bypassed from a normal photo of my face, well sounds ok so far, what about a video? I'm saying that because most of us are using social medias and sharing photos there, so what if someone will copy my photo and turn it into an animation like I'm blinking my eyes for real?

So our face will be stored into a big database? It sounds amazing, don't know why...

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

RaduV
If you are using any social media platform your photo is already stored in a big database. Your asked a really nice question and so for I don't have a pertinent answer. Probably when they are asking to stand for the photo you would have to stay in a particular way and then blink. I'm not saying that you can't rig a movie to do that but it's hard and I'm not sure exactly how many people can do that.

Anyway they don't pretend that is safer than a password, more like an alternative way to authorize it. Keep in mind that passwords can be stolen also.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

procoder
That was just an example. And yeah I'm sure that all photos are there, once you upload them they'll never be deleted.

I wasn't referring to other databases in generally, I was talking about this database, the problem it's not the database itself, the problem is what happen next after they goes there. In this case a database that contains only selfies is more important than a database that contains random images. Just an example again.

Creating an animation of your face might sound impossible, but it's not , at least not when it comes to CGI(Computer Generated Imagery).

And yes passwords as everything else are vulnerable somehow, and of course that nothing is 100% secure.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah that's a good point. If someone could happen to find a video of you and there was a part in it that is a close up of your face and you happen to blink a couple times in that part. Then they could crop that part and put it on a screen and just play that. But I would hope that it's not as simple as that and the hardware and software they used to actually do it is smart enough to know when it's an actual face and not just a screen with that persons face on it playing as a video. I really hope that is the case else we're going to be reading stories....

And yes, basically it means they will have to store your face in a database I guess. And as anyone knows, databases aren't fully safe and can be hacked. Just ask LinkedIn and Yahoo! LOL..

Even though it is innovative I still have my doubts about it. The main intention is to increase security, but I believe that there is always a way around it. I would rather go for codes that are generated on a device that is owned by the individual. The device itself will be locked. I know that having someone look just like you is maybe a bit farfetched but you never know! And as procoder and mike mentioned, it could be done after all!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

RaduV
There isn't any protection system that is 100% unbreakable but it forces the hacker to struggle a bit more than with the normal systems that are protected only by passwords. The thing with the devices is a good thing and also a not so good thing. For instance, I have my device linked to my online banking account and whenever I access it from my phone it skips some step because it recognize my device and assumes that is me.

However, when I try to log in from my laptop it asks all kind of security steps to be taken before they will give me access. My point is that I, as a seaman, don't carry all the electronic tokens or even my primary phone with me and I get my account blocked because they don't recognize the device.

What if you have an evil twin, and they decide to go on a shopping spree on your expense? See, everything has a loophole! The fact that I don't like is how a credit/debit card company will store your identity basically. They don't ever tell their customers just how secure their servers are which is an immediate red flag for me. They just create features, and hope people will use it without disclosing those details.

I don't like sending companies my selfie just to purchase something, that seems to be a tad bit ridiculous on their part. But I know they are trying other methods of enhanced security but a selfie seems to be quite intrusive. What ever happened to the fingerprint? Like on iPhones you could unlock the phone with your fingerprint, why don't they try something like that for devices that have that option?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

RaduV
I haven't thought about my evil twin brother doing the shopping spree, anyway it isn't a perfect system. First you need to download the app, login into your account and then you can authorize the payments with your face. So he / she might need to know a lot of details before she can reach the part where the payment should be approved.

I believe also that it does not exist the perfect looking twin so I'm thinking that when they scan your photo they will use some face recognition software and the payment is approved only if the recognition is above some percentage.

I find it simply stupid, glad I don't have a MasterCard! I live my Visa, especially the hover payment thingy for which you don't need to enter a pin number.
Sure if someone was to steal my credit card maybe it would be able to do some shopping at some point but eventually, a limit would be reach and a pin would be required.
Anyways, its very fast and I just love it, hope they keep it this way, I simply don't need additional security, I can block all my cards in seconds from my smartphone bank app.

With the prevalence of digital crimes, corporations are thinking of ways to prevent fraud. That selfie identification is one good way of ensuring the authenticity of the user. However, is it fraud proof? We know that criminals are always one step ahead when it comes to fraud and they may find a way on how to overcome this obstacle.
