    How to stand out in the app store so you get downloads

    Designing an app, or making it yourself, is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a successful app. Getting the app downloaded millions of times is where your real battle is, and it's a competitive world.


    Get lurkers to become downloaders
    You'll need to make your app stand out within the sea of other apps that may show up in the same search results as you. One of the biggest things will be adding high quality images to the description page. If you you're already a well known brand you will notice that people will be more willing to download your app solely because they saw your main image in the search results.

    Another one of the big things to get downloads is that your app can never all below 4 stars. If your rating drops to 3 stars you will notice a lot less downloads. This is due to the fact that 77% of new users to your app won't download it if it's lower than 4 stars. People only want the best apps at their finger tips. With a high rating you can even turn these people into buyers if you have in app purchases or a paid app.

    You can't really control your ratings by users because it is up to them how they rate your app. But you can talk with them so they feel included and you can get feedback. After you figure out what is wrong you can fix something and get their low rating up to a 5 star rating How to stand out in the app store so you get downloads


    Hook them with smart onboarding
    So they now have your app on their phone, the battle doesn't stop here. You'll need to help them in any way possible when it comes to setting up their profile, simple actions within the app, etc. Most people will just hammer through the setup process on their own, but there will be a select few who get stuck along the way and this is where a lot of people just stop using the app entirely.

    Set up hints in order to hold their hand through the entire process. I know that when I'm playing on an app or even a video game on PS4, if there isn't a short tutorial to show me the ropes in the beginning I feel lost and don't know what to do. With an app I usually just get bored and delete it since they are usually free. With a console game I grind away because I already dropped $60 on it and own it for life lol.


    Personalize your communications to make the customers experience great
    Once the person has successfully been brought on board, you now have to get them engaged with your app.

    Within the app, use the persons name when possible. An example of this would be "Razzy! You've leveled up!" or "Your power is full, Razzy". These will make it seem like the app is working with the user and increase the time on app.

    Sending push notifications is also a great way to bring people back into your app. This isn't really a way to get people to download your app, but it's a good practice to use in everything you launch on the app store How to stand out in the app store so you get downloads


    Shares and recommendations
    A lot of people come into an app because of a share on a social platform they see or someone recommended it to them. An easy way to get shares is to offer bonuses to users who get downloads. I noticed a dragon game recently doing this and they went from a few thousand downloads to a million in just a few months. They offered in game bonuses to people who got their friends, family and random users to download through their affiliate link.     I have often wondered how app developers get the time and willingness to develop apps considering the huge competition that is available for certain apps. However there seem to be many app developers who are willing to do it, and it is only fair that we mobile users encourage them by rating and reviewing their apps which is a driving force for their reputation. You listed some good tips over there, and I am sure that those who read through this post will be able to find some guidelines to utilize to improve the success of their apps.

    I agree with you about the app rating there. I don't download anything that is less than 4 stars ever. I have found so many apps are useless or buggy even when there are 4 stars.

    I am very quick to uninstall an app if it doesn't work to my satisfaction so yes what happens after someone downloads the app is just as important as getting them to download it in the first place. I usually decide very quickly whether I want to keep an app or not and in most cases I don't keep it.

    I think I am probably the worse app downloader and remover there is LOL

    Yeah rating is very important when it comes to mobile apps, actually everything depends on rating, because nobody will download an app without even a single good review. Also according to some studies, 3 stars ratings are seems always more trustworthy and fair feedbacks than other stars.

    I don't rate too often, but if it's a app that I like then I give 5 stars without thinking twice, otherwise I just uninstall it.

    Ok so I am not the only one that uninstalls all the time, I was wondering whether other people did that too.

    So yes making sure your app is really user friendly, compatible with all phones and works properly without constant bugs would be a top priority.

    Talking about phone compatibility, one of the big problems I am facing right now is that I am so often told apps are not compatible with my phone and this just ticks me off. Is this a really common problem?

    LOL! yeah, I just don't want to waste my time using apps that doesn't even deserve to be called apps. Also another reason why I uninstall them are ads, I've seen some of those apps that are fully loaded with ads, just wonder how do they expect to generate money from ads if they are dedicated to ads only and have forgot the main priority which is the function of the app.

    It depends on the phone model and the platform that you're using Lynne.

    i agree@Lynee. Even if I have a recommendation to these apps the first thing I look at before any download is what the rating is. It is so annoying when you have taken the trouble to download the app and it won't work properly. Normally the rating and review will tell you the app does not work properly e.t.c. Another way to stand out properly in the app store is to make sure that your app actually works properly e.g it can open, it does download, it does not hang e.t.c.

    It’s a stiff competition for the apps that I see in the app store because most of the apps have the same concept. When I checked on a phone battery saving app in the app store, I was kind of confused because there were so many of its kind that I forgot which one I was looking for. Maybe the competition is getting so aggressive that you really need to be creative with the caption and text of your app’s description.
