    Adblock Plus Announces New Ad Exchange?

    I've just been reading this article about Adblock Plus announcing that they are going to serve ads, or that is how I understand it anyway.

    How exactly does this work? I thought the whole point of an adblocker is that it blocks ads, but apparently that is not how it works. There are apparently "white listed ads, yes these are ads that are marked as fine to appear by the adblocker and these are from advertisers that pay to have their ads white listed.

    Kinda sounds a little hypocritical to me. Like I downloaded an adblocker so I don't see ads, not so the adblocker can decide for me which ads I see.

    Am I understanding this all wrong?

    Hmm this is interesting, but it is understandable too if you ask me. As it seems they are not going to stop all ads anymore, they want to show on our screen only white listed ads, which means that we'll see only 'good ads' chosen by us, because those ads will be active based on our reviews, it's an automatically process, for example if 1K people will rate an ads as bad, that ads will be removed from the white list. However, I'm not sure how 'rating system' will work exactly, and if that system will not be abused with fake reviews to manipulate the ads.

    Yeah you're right, but I don't care if they will do that because I can simply uninstall it as adblocker it's not the only way to block ads. I'm using it because their list of blacklisted ads is huge and updated, and yeah it's very effective.

    I'm sure that when people will see ads with adblocker installed, they will look for something else, adblocker has more than 50 million users, and those users have installed adblocker for one reason, to block ads.

    In the end they will lose, not we users!

    I'm not too worried about this, because not only do I have AdBlock Plus, I also block ads through my hosts file. This way, if any plugin developer decides to go rouge such as AdBlock Plus *cough cough* I still won't see those annoying and obnoxious advertisements. One thing I hate is seeing advertisements, it annoys me to no end and most of the time it's for things I am not even interested in.

    Basically they are just trying to find a way to turn a profit from the millions that block advertisements, I suppose the donations they receive are not enough? Very interesting business model ABP, very.

    Exactly Everett, that is what ticked me off because I only recently got the free Adblock and I donated some money to them..... now I wonder why on earth I bothered to do that since they don't actually block ads, they just block the people that won't pay to have their ads white listed... not nice.

    Calm down my dear, it's just a commercial. Adblock Plus Announces New Ad Exchange? No, I understand your bemusement. It does seem very hypocritical on the face of it. They are an ad block company, called AdBlock that specialize in blocking ads if the user chooses to use their toolbar/addon/plugin to do so. That means we choose to install it because we choose to block ads of all kinds, shapes and sizes. And when you've been using AdBlock for years already and find out they are actually white listing some sites ads it goes against everything you thought they stood for. But when you look deeper into this it is only a limited amount of sites that they're white listing and they may not include any of the sites you mostly visit. Also, those ads have to be super highly polished and targeted to you, they wont let any ad through. Although that's not really guaranteed when it comes to money. It all comes down to money. Companies have been throwing offers at AdBlock for years to white list them for a fee and AdBlock have been saying no. Each time the offers got bigger and bigger and now it looks like they're taking the bait and giving into money over principalities. But hey what's new new right!?     Yeah I guess money talks doesn't it Mike but it really does defeat the entire point of having an Adblock doesn't it?

    I was under the impression that Adblock will block all ads, but now it seems they will let through all the advertisers that have big bucks to pay them and all the other smaller folk will have their ads blocked. It seems kinda nasty to me LOL

    The thing is, they are a giant in the world of blocking ads. They are being confronted by large companies to whitelist their advertisements. There is a market for this now, because these companies want their ads to be seen by the millions that have adblocker installed.

    Now, there is an issue though. If you are a provided of an adblocker and yet you don't block all the ads then what exactly is your extension/addon/plugin for? They have an option of nonintrusive ads that are whitelisted that you can blacklist, but we want NO advertisements at all!

    If they do decide to go rouge, then hosts file will come into play more. This is how I block advertisements anyways, even if some ads are not blocked by ABP then they are most definitely blocked by my hosts file.

    Exactly, a very important percentage of the total internet users use some form of ad blocker! This leaves millions of people as "untapped potential", basically a gold mine for some companies and they want to find a way to exploit them.

    The way things are going I bet in 10 years operation systems like Windows will have you look at ads just to use the computer! Like in a youtube video, every once in a while ads will pop up with a tiny little skip button in the corner, maybe make that button harder to click by having it change location.
