The physical marketplace Walmart is rumored to be in talks with Jet.com to purchase their ecommerce marketplace for around $3 billion. Walmart has not yet acquired the ecommerce giant, but it could be a possibility in the near future.
Jet.com was started up with and idea and over $500 million in investments from private investors such as New Enterprise Associates and the mutual fund company Fidelity. Acquiring such funds at the beginning of the launch of Jet.com quickly pushed them to the tops with the likes of amazon.com and ebay.com. Now they're not a close competitor, but they were on the right track.
The founder of Jet.com, Marc Lore, also founded the parent company to Diapers.com and sold it to Amazon.com. Could Walmart be in a deal to purchase Marcs new venture, Jet.com, because it knows that if Amazon purchases it they will be almost unstoppable in the ecommerce sector?
If Jet.com were to sell to Walmart, Walmart would then have the biggest physical marketplace in the world as well as one of the biggest online marketplaces in the world to compete with amazon and eBay. The funding Walmart currently has from investors and it's own profits from it's marketplaces is more than enough to push Jet.com into contention for the top ecommerce platform in the world.
Walmart recently started a $49.99 one time payment for shipping fees to rival Amazons Prime membership for free 2 day shipping. Amazon charges it's users just under $100 a year for free 2 day shipping and Walmart is roughly half of that. Acquiring Jet.com and incorporating the $49.99 a year free shipping would definitely pull users from Amazon prime and gradually build the user base of Jet.com over the next few years.
In the end it's all up to Jet.com if they want to sell or not. I'm positive that Walmart could afford the $3 billion price tag that is being tossed around and if they did purchase jet.com it would begin to rise quicker than it currently is.
What do you guys and girls think about all of this? Do you think Jet.com will actually sell for the $3 billion price tag or do you think they'll hold onto their company and push it higher than it is now?

I was so irritated I wanted to send a message to Amazon voicing my frustration but you cant even message them? UGH
I then went onto eBay and bought some things and although some products on eBay are not available to ship to my country there were still plenty of products available, plus when something was not available to ship to my country I had the option of sending a special message to the seller which was cool.
I have of course never purchased from Walmart before, or from Jet.com... but that sounds awesome if there is a competitor for Amazon coming up. Here's hoping they ship to South Africa! Well I tried to place an order yesterday with Amazon and I was right pissed off at the end of it. I have been eyeing some goodies for a long time and it was quite a mission finding products that are shipped to South Africa. All the products I added did not have that message "does not ship to South Africa" on it, so I placed my order and all went fine. Then I tried to pay and it rejected every single product there saying that that product does not get sent to South Africa.
