    HTTP Response Code 410 Gone vs Custom Gone Code

    I know many people recommend using a 404 response, but I have decided not to in this case, as I want to distinguish resources that have been deleted intentionally. I have resources that may be deleted, however it's possible they could be recreated, or a resource that results in the same url could appear in the future. What is better to use in this case, a 410 Gone response (which indicates the resource is gone forever, and this url should not be referred to anymore) or a custom response to indicate the file is gone?

    Oh wow, I've never even heard of a 410 Gone Response before.I am very interested to hear what the feedback is on this question as I have a number of pages that are not relevant anymore and I would like to delete them but I thought this could be damaging for my website so instead I redirected them.

    Is there a reason why you don't redirect these pages?

    Well if you are planning to make those resources active again in the same url you should use a 404 response, because when you send a 404 response google will recheck that url to make sure it's really invalid. If you send a 410 response it means that resource is deleted and gone forever, and it will help you to de-index it faster from google.

    That's what I want, both search engines and users to know they had the correct url, that the resource is no longer available nore is it planned to ever be again, and they should not refer to that url anymore. My concern with using a 410 response is that it's meant to be permenant. I don't want to hurt the possibility of the url being re-indexed if it ends up in use again.

    EDIT: To be clear. The "gone" response only would be show the first time a user visits the resource after it's gone. After that it would become a 404 response because the server doesn't think the resource exists.

    If you are sure you won't bring back that specific page, do a 401.
    If you're not really sure and you may bring it back in the future, don't do a 410 because you will essentially tell search engines to purge and de-index your page. It will be pretty hard to re-index after a 410.

    I personally would do a 301 to similar services, but that's just me. I'm sure you know better what is good for your website. Good luck and let us know how it all turns out!
