If you ever asked your self if using traffic exchange websites is good or bad, then i would say, they have good and maybe more bad side effects.
First of all, TE sites offer large number of visits to your blog, but they viewing it for short time, like 5 - 10 seconds and it's very high bounce rate traffic, so it's not recommended. Views by these visitors are very low conversion rate because they mostly run to collect as many points / credits to gain traffic for their websites.
If you have Adsense ads on your blog, then DON'T use traffic exchanges, because you can be banned from Adsense and lose your revenues. Traffic exchanges mostly using iframes to show your website and Google will recognize it and probably penalize / ban you from Adsense due to their terms of services.
Other suggestions regarding this topic is welcome so please share your experience!
Some of the sales I get on my sites are from people I pulled in from last year through a manual traffic exchange
A trick I use for traffic exchanges and my own website is to not send it directly to my main website :D
I'll use a website that is only a few pages and send the traffic there. I'll also have all the links on that page be nofollow so that I don't get credit for it in my SEO campaigns. I'll have the small website promote something I'm trying to sell, but I won't sell it right there. The person will have to click through to my website, which will open in a new tab, and they can read what I have on there. By doing this you will not interrupt their surfing through the traffic exchange and they will be happy.
Another way to increase your click through rating is to have text on the page that says something along the lines of "All the links on this page open in a new tab. Clicking the links will not interrupt your traffic exchange surfing." This way people will know it's ok to click through and it won't screw up what they were doing on the other website :D
Now this really only works for manual traffic exchanges where people have to click the "Next" button after they've been on the website for a designated time. I've actually bought traffic packages from traffic exchanges and did this technique to pull in clients. You don't get thousands of clients, but the ones you do get are going to stick with you for a while :D Some of the sales I get on my sites are from people I pulled in from last year through a manual traffic exchange :D

I did have many more bookmarked in my browser but deleted the folder about 2 or 3 years ago as had not used them in over 8+ years. I started doing SEO and spending my time learning and doing that and sticking my fingers into much more profitable pies and doing things that provided a much longer yield on investment of time such as forum posting and high quality blog comment posting. That also helped my SEO rankings as well doing that so it's like it has several benefits to it that last forever pretty much.
Where as TE sites only give you a quick boost of traffic and no backlinks or anything that can help your ranking. And the people using them are mostly noobs who think they can get some quick traffic to their site but don't realize that it's the same people doing the viewing too and probably aren't even interested in your site anyway so wont even engage with it in anyway but rather would just click the matching icon or next button to view the next site as fast as they can to earn credits which will be used on having their site viewed.
These days using TE sites is a complete waste of time and offer no benefit at all. You're much better off using that time to do something else that will send you real targeted traffic and help to increase your sites ranking as well. Yeah they used to be good like 10+ years ago when they first started coming out. I used to use them just for getting optins and subscribers as you wasn't allowed to use them if you had Adsense on your site as it was against Adsense's terms and I think they still are. And like you say, they have a high bounce rate as well so it was about the only thing you could gage as to how effective it was by seeing how many subscribers you got for that day or week etc. It gives a mixed bag of results though probably because it's such a mixed bag of users and types of people at all levels or walk of life. Mostly a lot of noob webmasters and bloggers and affiliates but generally CTR and engagement was abysmal and hard going.
