Does Having A Good Domain Improve Ranks?

A few days back I found myself in a sort of SEO guru group (I find it useful joining these groups as I am able to get a lot of info). One guy mentioned that he was struggling to rank in his nice, which is a very low competition keyword. Some guy in the group suggested getting a domain name containing, or at least relating to his key word. This created a huge debate in the group and no one could really decide if having a domain name relating to your nice is really important for ranking.
Now I know that the domain ending is important and some endings have more authority than others in the Search Engine's algorithm, but do you think the actual domain name is important. If I make two identical sites in the shoe niche would shoeforall.com rank better/ worse/ the same as gardenplant.com ?

If no one could really decide if having a domain name relating to your nice is really important for ranking, then this is not any kind of SEO gurus. There is no guessing about this matter when it comes to SEO. Having main keywords of niche your website is, in your domain name is very important factor when it comes to creating quality SEO for your website. I bet, even people with lover skills know about this... So don't let them fool you ;)

I presume you're talking about EMD's? (Exact Match Domains)? EMD's took a massive hit in the SERP's a while back. They used to be near the only thing you needed to do to get good ranking positions with them without having to much or any on-page or even off-page SEO. However, things have progressed a bit since then and an EMD doesn't work quite as well as it used to. That said, sometimes you can still rank top with an EMD provided you are one of the first ones to get it for a niche that is new and hot.

However, these days, an EMD isn't no guarantee you'll rank top for it even if you are the first website/domain to have those keywords in them. Because the way Google works (and has always worked) is to rank the sites/domains that have the keywords on them first over other sites that subsequently have those keywords on them. Basically it (Google) ranks them in order of when they was found.

But that doesn't mean and is no guarantee (these days) that Google will rank your site first and keep it there even if your domain/site is the first one to have those keyword on them. That's simply because there will be other people doing SEO on their site and that includes both on-page and off-page SEO. And if that SEO is better than your site (even if yours was the first), then Google will likely favor that other site that has been SEO'd over yours. Even though you was first on the Internet to have those words in your domain or on your site.

These days, it's not really even so much about having the keywords you're targeting in your domain. Although it can help exponentially. It's about having a brand name and having good SEO on it so and making it into an authority site so that it still ranks high when you put those keywords on your site such as in a product page or blog post for example.

You can have site called shoeforall.com and a site called gardenplant.com and you'd think that the shoeforall.com would rank higher for something to do with shoes. But at the end of the day, if the gardenplant.com had the same keywords on it and better content (on-page SEO) and also have more backlinks with the keywords in the anchor text they're both competing for; the gardenplant.com would probably be ranked higher because the on-page SEO (content) and the links pointing to it are better.

That's what you have to look at and take into consideration and sort of how it works.

Harry this is exactly they type of thing I was thinking about when I said I hear so many contradicting things about working online.

I believe that having your main keywords in your domain can make a difference to ranking your website. However I agree with everything that Mike has said, it is not the one main thing you should do. Ranking has so many different elements to it and your domain name is one small little thing. If do loads of all the small little things they all add up to good ranking.

If you just choose a great domain name and do nothing else to optimize your site it will not help you at all.

I think you need to decide on which things you will be focusing on to rank your website. There are also other things to take into account when you choose your domain name, like will you go for a dot com?

The length of your domain name could also play a factor. I have heard shorter domain names rank better than long domain names.
