How to SEO long long tail keywords?

I am not sure if that title makes a lot of sense? Let me explain, ok so long tail keywords are by their very nature long.

The meta title has an optimum length and very often I have not been able to fit my full long tail keyword in there because it has become too long and I worry that will have a negative impact on my SEO.

I have also heard that the alt description for images should be a maximum of maybe 5 or 6 words. So what happens if your keyword is 7 or 8, maybe even 9 words?

How do you optimize your page for SEO when your long tail keyword is well, just too long?

It makes sense! I know what you're saying and I think it's something many webmasters and blogger and SEO's can relate to! To be honest, if the long tail keyword is longer than the recommended meta title length (only a recommended size by what Google shows as it truncates anything longer in the SERP pages). However, a title that is longer than the optimum suggested length will not have a negative effect on your SEO! Not unless you are using the same word more than two or three times in that title. There is nothing wrong with a long title other than what Google shows in the SERPs. It only shows a certain length title so it will truncate (cut) it off at some point and that is not very people friendly. But Google can still see and read all the words in your title. So don't be afraid to use long titles, they wont negatively effect your SEO but they're just not very people friendly for people searching in Google for something but if they need to be long for a reason and the reason has meaning to it then don't be afraid to go with a long title!

As for the alt text, that's not necessarily true. An alt text can be a sentence and that could be a fairly long sentence too. For example, let's say you have a picture of a family of elephants. You could use an alt text like "family of elephants". But the alt text is not meant to be something you do thinking about the SEO value of it. It should be something you add for people who are blind or can't or don't want to load images only text. So a better alt text for a picture of a family of elephants would literally be "A picture of a family of elephants having a well deserved drink". Now isn't that a much nicer image to picture in your mind?

That's how I basically look at it anyway! So If I was writing a post about elephants and I wanted to use a really really long tail keyword such as as "amazing pictures of elephants drinking water in the desert". I'd use an iteration of that in the title such as "The Top 10 Amazing Pictures of Elephants Drinking Water in The Desert During the Dakar Rally 2016". But I'd probably make the slug url something like top-10-amazing-pictures-elephants-drinking-water-desert-dakar-rally-2016. Removing the stop words like to and the etc.

So yeah, hope that helps! How to SEO long long tail keywords?

Lynne Google had actually increased this year the optimal length of both titles and meta description (what actually shows in Google Index). Titles can now go to 70 or 71 characters (I think it was 60 in the past) and meta description can now go up to 270-280 characters.

So how long are your long tail keywords? I doubt you will find any good long tail keywords beyond 70 characters.
Also, keep in mind if it has searches, Google will not penalize you for using a very long keyword.
Also the time of very long tailed keywords is kinnda gone, from what I'm reading lately is all about the middle length keywords now.

Yeah that's a good point. And usually the longer the tail the less search volume it gets. Also long tail keywords aren't always buyer keywords as well so you could be targeting a long tail that doesn't convert very well. It really depends on the niche though and of course, what you say to people in your content and how well you can make that search convert into something when it reaches your site. Whether it's a subscriber or a buyer. Still though, every niche has a lot of long tails for it and they all provide ideas for content to write and blog around. How to SEO long long tail keywords?

Thanks Mike and Cristian. No my long tail keywords have not necessarily been on the crazy side of long lol. There are just so many things to consider though, just using my keyword in the meta title might not be best. It may rank nicely initially but best would be to write a catchy title, so I would often want to add something to my title to make it more clickable. There's not much point in getting a good ranking but nobody finds my title and description enticing enough to click on!

And from what I hear Google is placing more importance on that aspect now too.

Thanks for clearing up my query about the alt description, that makes a lot of sense and it is nice to know that I am not limited there like I thought I might be.

Can you please explain to me why I should remove stop words from my URL? I heard the best was to use my exact keywords, and sometimes they have stop words in. Perhaps this query should get a whole discussion of its own? I have heard to many mixed things about stop words

Reason why: Shorter URLs are better. Prettier. Easier to remember! If you already have URLs with the stop words in you can leave them as they are or you could try shortening them by removing the stop words from them or just making them shorter and easier to remember. But you'd have to set up a permanent 301 rule so the old URL redirects to the new one. WordPress can do this on it's own for the URL if it's not changed that much as it does auto suggest the most likely URL (as a way to keep 404's down). But that's basically the main reason why. So they're shorter, easier to remember. Also another reason not to use stop words is that Google ignores them and only looks at the main keywords.

As long as you have those words in the title of the URL as well you'll be fine. But let's say you have a really long title such as something like: "10 Reasons Why Removing Stop Words From Your URLs Can Help Your Users And Be Good For Your Onpage SEO".

By default the URL slug for that title would be "10-reasons-why-removing-stop-words-from-your-urls-can-help-your-users-and-be-good-for-your-onpage-seo".

But a better URL slug would be "10-reasons-removing-stop-words-urls-help-onpage-seo" or something.

It's shorter, easier to remember, and still contains your main keywords in them.

That's the general consensus when it comes to long URL vs short URL in SEO. How to SEO long long tail keywords?

Thanks Mike that certainly makes a lot of sense. Would this same rule of Google ignoring stop words apply to all your content? Meta title, meta description and within the actual content itself too? So I can use the keywords without the stop words but use stop words within my content to make it natural?

The long tail keyword does not need to be too long for example. When people are searching online they do not use grammatically correct language, the search term is not a complete sentence. For example, when someone is searching for the wild elephant pictures in Africa, his search term will be something like "wild elephant pics africa" he is unlikely to use The Wild Elephants Pictures in Africa. You can keep your long tail search term short by omitting stop words.
